I need a functional Sgain Dubh
Yes I am in need of a Sgain Dubh (Scottish sock knife).

Most of what I am finding are decorative only, and dog gone it if I spend money on a blade I want it to be fully functional.

If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.

Interesting. Not what I picture when I think of a Sgain Dubh. Lizardman, are you looking for something that looks traditional or dressy, but is functional and built for use?

Here's a few results from a quick search:

I am looking for more traditional, not so much dressy or shiny as chrome doesn't get you home.

I can't see spending good money on a blade that has been blunted or isn't sharp as a knife of any sort is a tool.

So I am looking for more function than form.

Many of the Sgain Dubhs are sold blunted.

It can be good stainless or carbon steel, a decent hilt, but is able to cut a steak or dress a fish or a bird.

Over on Blade Forums there have been some posted for sale. Maker Paul Baleta seems to be popular for this style. These are sold but you can contact him.

A Randall Made Gambler is very much a sgain dubh.

Randall makes them in 4" and 5", and in many handle materials.

https://www.randallknives.com/knives/gambler/

If you can't find one for sale, you can get on a dealer's list and get one in a few months. If you get on Randall's list, it will be five years or so.

Hmmm? Ya'll can have all the high dollar knives you want. When I go out n the field, my fixed blade is a military issue K-Bar.

Does it fit in your knee sock under your kilt?

OP didn't ask about KA-BAR knives.

A Sgain Dubh fits in the sock and is a blade of about four inches long single edge, it accompanies a dirk which is a dagger worn on the belt that will damn sure give me more reach than any Ka-Bar standard issue.

In fact as the Dirk can be any serviceable dagger I use a Spadia which is a Spanish pig hunting dagger with a 14 inch double edged blade that is about three inches wide at the base where it goes into the hand guard.

The Ka-Bar is a serviceable knife, but it is a one size fits all solution to a problem that never existed.

Also the Sgain Dubh being traditional can be worn with a kilt when one is at a wedding or other function where wearing a suit is appropriate.

I often in street clothes carry a Cold Steel OSS hilt down on a shoulder harness. Oh and it will have longer reach than your Ka-Bar too.

I know of which I am asking and have received some very good leads from the fine folk here. Just because it doesn't fit your taste doesn't mean it isn't nice or tasteful. I love the smell of cigar smoke, but don't like smoking them as an example of what is good for you might not be good for me.

Please do let us know what you end up deciding on. Have been following this thread from the start.

Bought a Sgain Dubh a bit more than five decades ago at the Scottish Shop (think that was the name) in Williamsburg, VA. It was not fancy. The blade was the best part and the handle was black plastic, but the blade was perfect and sharp as could be. Being quite young at the time, it was all i could afford. They sure had some beauties on display.

Hope i can find it again, someday.

Wishing you the best of luck with your search.

I went with Michael Wall.

He is making one for me, and has confirmed receipt of payment.

It will be not too flashy, but very functional.

Will post a photo when I get it.

I have a couple of his knives, one of which he custom made for me based on an existing design, but with modifications. Both are absolutely fantastic blades, and the custom one is my perfect knife. You won’t be disappointed with his work.

Michael has sent me pictures of the finished product, and if it didn't go in the Mail Tuesday it probably went in today....

I will post pictures when it arrives.
