This, 100%. This is going to seem silly, but if it didn’t have the choil, it wouldn’t need the choil. Let me “choke up” on the blade with the handle, safely. I’ve started using my Cold Steel Master Hunter more than my ESEE 3 for this reason, though I prefer the 3’s blade and sheath system. For this reason, in the OP’s scenario, I’d consider the SRK over the ESEE 4.

No finger guard but, FWIW - my brother loves the ESEE 4HM, and I've been getting a lot more use out of the ESEE 3SHM than anything except the EDC Victorinox.

I was very tempted on the HM 3 or 4. Ultimately I bought myself and my father each a Jääkäripuukko 110 https://www.varusteleka.com/en...l/63681?option=51416 as a relatively compact survival knife. In 2025 it’s still hard to beat the Esee aftermarket. The standard plastic sheath is still effective.
