One of these days, a Cypher 2 is coming home with me, but I'm also down with a wharncliff Combat Troodon. With the dual spring design, I can see why Tony Marfione didn't want to go with ball bearings.

Eknives has all Gen 2 knives on sale 25 percent off. This is probably the best chance to ever have to get a mictotech this cheap as they are normally not discounted.

A lot of the big online retailers are blowing them out. I've been eyeballing a turquoise for a while, but wound up springing for a tan handle tanto from PVK - also 25% off. My stonewash tanto Ultratech has been the only thing in my pocket for three years straight and I've been wanting to pick up another Gen 2 or two while they're still available. I don't like the changes they made to the fullers on the Gen 3's. Probably will cycle a few Spydercos out and pick up another Ultratech in turquoise and call it good. I've found my favorite pocket knife I think. It's just the perfect size, weight and proportions for me. The Ultratech tanto edge and profile is imminently usable.

Nashville Tactical Lounge is currently running a 25% off sale on Gen 2 Ultratechs, and they have some of the rarer ones in stock like the clear and Ultem top variants.

My nephew bought me a Kershaw Livewire OTF for Christmas and I liked it so much I picked up a couple more. Now I get to try out Microtech. I have become a huge fan of OTF’s. They are pretty perfect for pocket carry plus no legality issues in FL as a ccw holder.

So I have a couple boxes coming from Eknives and the Nashville guys. The genII’s seem like a solid design and those are good prices so I went a bit nuts. I got ultratechs and utx85’s. I think I will like the smaller one the best. We will see tomorrow when the first box arrives.

Scary thing is that I keep looking at the sites and wondering if I need a double edge dagger with full serrations on one side. lol

100% agreed. I was a huge Spyderco fan, and I still like their knives, but when I got my first Ultratech in 2022, I was an almost instant convert. I've carried the same knife daily since. The size makes a lot more sense for an EDC pocket knife, honestly. Nowhere near as wide in the pocket as even the venerable PM2. You get more blade to handle ratio in a thinner and lighter package with an OTF. I carry mine basically at all times and it's basically unnoticeable even just wearing basketball shorts around the house. I had a Hogue that was ok, but the Microtechs just have a more solid feel. I'm a huge, huge fan of the straight edge tanto blades, but I'll admit that I've thought the dagger with one full serrated side would make a lot of sense from a utility standpoint.

Which ones did you pick up? I guess I ought to take a family photo of mine. I have a Gen 2 Combat Troodon I need to send back for a factory refresh, the spring failed and it's jammed up, plus it was always an absolute bear to deploy the blade on it. There's a certain gun store here that stocks a bunch of Microtechs, I've had to resist the urge to handle a Gen 3. I know I'll end up with one if I keep looking at them.

You heard me say I went nuts right? So, I picked up 12 knives. 3 UTX85's, 2 S/E Tantos and one clip point.

Then I got 8 Ultratech's. 2 are trigrip handles and the rest different colors. One is Star Wars for my son for Christmas and one for my nephew for Christmas. The others are the Spartan blade, tantos, and clip point. One of which is partial serrations.

So I got 10 for me and 2 for presents. Oh yea I got the Hellhound and Warhound blade profile.

Nuts. I always wanted a Microtech but the prices were crazy. 25% off is still not cheap but you aren't going to find much cheaper.

I also bought a tri screw from amazon because I watched a bunch of videos and these seem pretty easy to take apart compared to most autos. It supposedly voids the warranty but nothing inside seems hard to work on if it gets gummed up. I would try flooding it with lighter fluid, or brake cleaner first but I do like to tinker if necessary.

I agree with you though. That Kershaw Livewire has lived in my pocket since Christmas. I don't even look at my other knives and honestly unless I hate them for some reason the Microtechs seem even more badass.

I had some money put aside for a Giessele upper but I spent it all on knives. Hmmm. I'm ok with that.

So I got my boxes. I love these knives. Everything about them is awesome. I am getting used to the increased firing pressure of the genII’s. My Livewire easily fires with less effort but it (I love the Livewire) is not as nice as the Microtechs in any other way.

As I sit here firing a UTX85 over and over one of two things is happening. It is loosening up or my thumb bicep is getting stronger. lol

Disassembling no longer voids the warranty, they unclenched a bit on that. However, if you fuck something up and they can tell you had it apart, you pay to have it fixed. Not the end of the world, really. Do be careful with the Amazon tool, though. Supposedly those are made out of case-hardened Gouda, but I don't know first hand. There's some guy out there who makes actual heat treated, properly hardened tool steel bit sets of the various tri wing sizes and styles Microtech has used over the years. I'll have to look around and see if I can find his kit again. It wasn't cheap, but it may be cheaper in the long run than shipping a knife back to Microtech to get a spring replaced.

I very nearly pulled the trigger on a Gen 2 Combat Troodon in turquoise. It being only $50 cheaper than the Gen 3 and a DE instead of a tanto helped stave off the temptation, though. I may succumb and finally try out a UTX-85, though. Debating between a full straight edge tanto or a serrated tanto... or maybe just finally get a drop point and call it a utility knife, I dunno.

If you're loving the solid build quality, you might also look at Heretic Knives [snickers in High Enabler]. Tony Marfione is Microtech, and his son, who of course started at Microtech, started his own company with basically his "don't sue me, Dad" versions of a number of the classic Microtech designs. Manticore = Cypher x Troodon, Cleric = Makora, Colossus = Scarab, Hydra = Halo. The Manticore comes in three sizes- S for Small, E for "we're actually spelling out SEX lulz," and L for Large. I have a Bladeshow '22 Manticore X I picked up off a forum member, and it's about the perfect size. 98% of the blade of a Combat Troodon, but a much more svelte body, and a lot smoother action. It being a DE instead of a tanto is basically the only reason it's still NIB. If you're loving the Microtechs, you definitely want to try out a Heretic at some point. Just don't be mad at me when you do. I also really like his blade profiles and grinds, too. The DE is a hollow grind with a beefy blade stock left down the center line vs being hollowed out. Smoother, more refined lines across the board.

Oh, and Guardian Tactical is another Sigforum favored OTF brand as well. I have yet to try out one of those, but I know Grumpy Biker loves them. Former Microtech employees, supposedly, who looked at how the sausage was made and decided they could do better. Ceramic ball bearing in the switches, I believe. Super solid build quality, butter smooth action, and what used to be more palatable prices. Looks like they're catching up to Microtech.

Anyways, that's wandering a little wide of the topic. I dug out my Gen 2 Combat Troodon and I'm really trying to decide if I want to try out one of the new ones or snag one of the last of the NOS Gen 2's. I like Microtech a lot, and with them on sale, the question of their price increases is definitely less of a reason to go with another brand.

I got 3 more coming tomorrow so I will figure out picture hosting again. Microtechs are awesome. I checked out the Heretics and they seem very nice but I gotta admit I prefer the aesthetic of the Microtech. I’ve been carrying around a red Hellhound (wharncliffe) that started off crazy stiff. Like I said earlier either it’s loosening up or I’m getting buff thumbs. Love this blade.

Here they are. Only missing the Bounty Hunter Ultratech because I didn't want my son to see his Christmas present. That green D/E UTX85 might be my favorite. A Livewire just because. Enjoy

pedropcola, I like how you shop. I ordered my first last night but opted for a Gen IV. I've got a GT Recon 035 and was afraid I wouldn't like the action of the Gen2 Microtechs compared to the Recon.

Of those knives there is one where the action is too stiff. I am either going to send it in or take it apart myself. My thumbs are getting used to it but still. The Livewire and the newer gen’s are way easier to actuate but it is weird that you get used to it pretty quickly.

As much as I love the Livewire, and it is a great knife, the MT’s just ooze better in every way IF you can accept the stiffer action. I suspect when I’m 80 I will have to go back to the Livewire which is buttery smooth.

My primary carry since I got these is the red tanto UTX85. Love that knife and the action is good.

That is probably the one thing I can’t quite understand. They seem to be manufactured to extremely tight tolerances yet the action can be pretty far apart. Hmm. Luckily I only have one that is outside my personal window.

I don’t like the added thickness or the clip of the genIV’s. I do like torx and dual springs though. Eventually I will add some of those.

Edited to add: I took apart that red one that was very stiff. The Amazon tool seems a bit rough but good enough. I was careful with everything. Cleaned it out, lubed the spring like they said, and then I put it all together without tightening the springs. For some reason I thought checking the action would be a good idea. Fuck me. I forgot about the screws that weren't tightened down and when I fired it all of them went flying. Well, most of them. Spent the next 10 minutes on my hands and knees with a wml (minus the gun lol) and figured I was about to buy a new set of screws on Amazon when I found the last one. So, don't do that. It seems to have worked. I worked the spring a tiny bit and the action seems better. Enough that I am content. Just don't fire it with the screws "kinda" in place. I am a moron.
