WalMart's Ozark Trail Folder
Have you seen this? D2 steel. Ten bucks! What a hoot! Big Grin

I was in WalMart today. I looked for one of these but it's no surprise it's out of stock.

It's a made in China knockoff of the Benchmade Bugout, able to be offered now that the Axis lock mechanism's patent expired several years back and it effectively became "open source".

It's about 1/15th the price of the fancier Bugout, but it's not 1/15th the knife. So it's a good bargain at $10, for a knife to keep multiple copies stashed around in various places, and for hard use where you won't mind tearing it up.

If you can't find it in store, you can order it from Walmart.com, though it's frequently out of stock due to how popular it's becoming.

Benchmade can kiss my lilly-white ass. I'd sooner use a spork as a cutting implement than give Benchmade a single cent.

No need to tell me it's made in China. That's a given. I'm just quite amused at the price, especially since the reviewer in that vid is a highly competent bladesmith and gives it good marks.

That wasn't necessarily an endorsement of Benchmade. Just giving some backstory for this bargain bin knife.

I picked one up when they first came out with it, I was pleasantly surprised for $10. I tried to immediately buy another but they were out of stock. 2 days ago I had to run into the store and I saw a huge Christmas display of their knifes and they had armloads of the same knife but white scales for $5. I grabbed another 4 of them. It’s really a decent little knife

These $5 white Ozark Trail knives you found are of similar design, but don't have the D2 steel blade found on the orange version, instead using some unknown flavor of cheap stainless steel, probably 3cr13.

The D2 blade is the big draw of the $10 orange ones... an actual decent blade steel, which you rarely find on a super cheap knife like these. D2 is well worth the extra $5, if you can find them.

(And while the D2 is only offered in orange, you can dye the plastic grips a darker color using Rit dye.)

Rogue… thanks for the info, I’ve not even taken any out of the package to look. I guess I just saw the Axis lock style lock and brain said try them for the price! Hell for the $20 plus tax I got in the white ones they’re good enough to stash in truck side pocket etc

Both the orange (bugout copy) and the one Rogue showed are great budget knives.

The bugout copy does have a reversible belt clip while the white one doesn't.

The axis lock on both is smooth and you can open and close by pulling on it and flicking your wrist.

Both came razor sharp (slices newspaper sharp).

I'm also in the "I hate Benchmade" camp so this is a great alternative.

I had some early Christmas money gifted me so I picked up one. The blade was really sharp, I never simply go with a factory supplied edge and I gave it a couple of swipes with a ceramic stick and now its REALLY sharp. In spite of it being all steel, save for the scales, of course it is lighter in weight than I was expecting. I'm going to carry it clipped in my right front pocket, I'll see if it becomes my new everyday carry.

If you got one with a reversible clip, it's pretty new. The old ones didn't have that. I have seen a video that purports the earliest of these knives had better steel than the newer ones, and the ones with the reversible clip have a slight but noticeable difference in grip texture, maybe embossed pattern in the scales.

But yeah, these orange-handled knives are decent for the price, regardless of origin.

I've been checking every Walmart I walk into since I heard about these a few months ago. I just found them in stock at my local Walmart. Para, I can send you one if you'd like. No charge, of course!

They have these available for shipping. I order a couple of each for stocking stuffers and truck knives.

I saw Para’s post last night, found a local WalMart that showed some in stock and headed over there this morning; picking up two knives (old stock, without the reversible clip).
As someone who still thinks fondly of a $16 orange Benchmade knock-off (Ganzo G704-OR) I bought from Amazon years ago (significant other - of that time - lost it at some point and they’re not sold anymore), I though this Ozark Trail knife would be interesting. I’ll add that I also owned and subsequently gave the aforementioned significant-other an orange Benchmade Bugout Mini (also now gone), so I have some hands-on time with the Benchmade version of what the Ozark Trail is based on.

First impressions: Compared to a Benchmade, it’s a $10 dollar knife. On the other hand, what a time to be alive when you can buy something like this (in this economy) for just $10 bucks! From a manufacturing point, that’s impressive. As Para once said in the Baofeng thread “If they were any cheaper, they’d be made out of cardboard.”
The axis lock spring seems a bit weak as when I tightened the main screw (so as to eliminate blade wobble), the axis lock stopped functioning properly; I ended up finding a compromise between minimal blade wobble and axis lock function.
I’ll note that I took one knife apart and it has tiny bearings in the washer (Benchmade has brass washers, no bearings) which I suspect will turn to absolute shit if ever exposed to salt water and/or not oiled periodically. After cleaning the manufacturing-process debris/metal shavings and oiling the bearings, I reassembled the knife.
Much like the Benchmade Bug-out, this is clearly a light duty knife. Perfect for daily box-opening beater duty or as a spare to be kept in the car.

I'm a big hearted guy so, since I already have one, spent my money for one more for my son in law for his truck. I hope he appreciates the effort and expenseSmile
