If you can wake up (very) early in the morning, you have a chance to see a rare celestial event with the naked eye. Over the past few days, the "surprise" comet Neowise, and its brilliant tail, has become visible in the Bay Area just before sunrise. Stargazers can see Neowise in the morning skies of the Bay Area, with peak viewing conditions expected on July 11 when the comet will reach an altitude of ten degrees above the horizon. Next week the comet will be visible as well in the evening sky, and it appears it may remain visible to the naked eye for a few more weeks. The comet was only discovered on March 27 by the NEOWISE space telescope (its official name is Neowise C/2020 F3). Neowise just completed its orbit around the sun in June and is currently the same distance from the sun as the planet Mercury. As it makes its trip out of the solar system, Neowise has shown brightly with a long comet tail in the morning skies above the West Coast. Photographer Moshen Chan shared images of the comet with SFGATE from Bernal Heights in San Francisco over the East Bay Hills just before 5 a.m. Tuesday. "I captured it this morning at sunrise as it appeared above San Francisco and Oakland," Chan explained. "It was bright in binoculars and visible to the naked eye." To find the comet in the night sky, you will need a clear view to the east-northeast. Neowise will be visible slightly above the horizon for about 30 to 45 minutes before sunrise. The comet's location is to the left of planet Venus near the Auriga constellation. To help with your search, you can use a star chart app on your smartphone, or you can also use The Sky Live website to plot out where to view Neowise in the morning sky. After July 12, the comet will be visible in the early evening in the northwest sky. The comet will make its closest approach to Earth on July 22. Although comets are a common occurrence in the night sky, it is rare for a comet with a dust trail to be visible by the naked eye. The most famous recent example of a bright comet viewable in the night sky was Hale-Bopp which was was closest to the Earth in 1997 and was visible for 18 months. _________________________ NRA Endowment Member _________________________ "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. I needed 7x35 binox to spot it from my neighborhood due to streetlights. A little after 3 am, very low in the n.e. sky. The tail gives it away. | |||

Saw it this morning about 0500 MDT even above the mountains at a direction of about 65° from my location. Picked it up with 8× binoculars and then better view with spotting scope. Too light to see it now. “I can’t give you brains, but I can give you a diploma.” — The Wizard of Oz This life is a drill. It is only a drill.
