Decided i was going to stay with Android and tried, unsuccessfully, to buy a Samsung S21 Ultra.
The country (Argentina) has run out of stock.
So I turned to Plan B and bought an iPhone 12 Pro.

I'm familiar with both OS but my main issue with Apple, that does not officially exist down here, is that my previous iPhones (3,3s and 4s) were rendered uselless by software updates and not by accidents. A software update nuked my beloved 4s by disabling (a thermal issue) the wifi and BT functions. I replaced it with a 5s but the spell was broken. Moved to Android after the 5s.

Down here, paying with hard currency for more room on the iCloud is a political PITA. Not worthcthe trouble.
The wife also has an iPhone plus an iPad and a MBP and her iCloud space barely covers the phone single backup.

So, before configuring my iPhone and start downloading Apple software here and there, i wonder if any of you use Google Drive intead of iCloud and with what results.
AFAIK, G Drive offers 15GB of free space instead of Apple's 5GB.

I do not trust Google in any way.
I use iCloud every day and it is encrypted.

I'm with PowerBook. I use iCloud for back on my iPhone and also Mrs. Flash's iPhone.

I don't knowingly use either one for anything I do on my S21. Doesn't seem to affect my otherwise clueless non-tekkie needs.

There are plenty of other options for cloud storage, not all of them free, but many far more secure and private than Google. For example, ProtonMail offers 500MB with their free plan, and more with their paid plans. As a Swiss company, they may be more palatable to the Argy Commies.

iCloud add on is $.99 a month, $12~ a year for more storage than I'd ever use. You can share this with your wife. Of the 50 GB for that prices, I've use only 5 GB so I doubt I'll ever run out of space.

I trust Apple 100x more so than google.

I don’t use either but if I were to use one, definitely would not be google. Google is the devil.

Both for different applications. One iCloud account, several Dropbox, and half a dozen G-Drive accounts. Nothing particularly important / sensitive is on any of the G.

Truth be told, i have never used neither of them. If and when i remember to back up i do it to my own hardware.

But since Apple devices have multiplied at home, i thought i might give the cloud (either Google's or Apple's a chance.

As stated, having monthly or yearly payements in foreign currency is not something we look forward to do. There are political sideffects involved, unfortunately.

As I understand it: They do collect some usage data, which has no personally-identifiable information, to support their advert platform that is, in turn, used by app developers for advert-supported apps on iThing platforms. It is my belief and understanding no data is harvested from such things as iCloud, Apple Mail, Calendar, Contacts, etc. use for that purpose.

The data stored on iCloud is encrypted. Some is encrypted at the device end. Other is encrypted at the iCloud end, as it's stored.

Does this mean I trust Apple iCloud as much as I do my own local storage? No, it does not. However I do somewhat trust it.

I do not have quite the same degree of trust in Google storage as I do Apple's, mainly because I simply do not trust Google.

I may be wrong but last time I looked, you can't share the $0.99 plan. The higher priced bigger plans, you can share with family.

I have google drive but I have it for the free 15gb. I stopped using google photos upload because Jun 2021, they started charging uploads against the free 15bg volume in a move to get people to upgrade to a paid volume.

I have icloud each for the two phones my wife and i have. For the infrequent times (like maybe once in five years), it makes switching to a new phone simple and easy.

But I don't mix and match cloud drives.

I have OneDrive which I don't really use except for OneNote. I just haven't gotten around to it. It comes with the Microsoft Office subscription which I have for Excel.

I have lifetime subscriptions to both pCloud and iceDrive which are my main repositories for my files. I have both, in case one of them goes kaput.

I also have acronis cloud but that's for their backup services. I think I can also use it as a volume but I don't.

I trust neither the cloud nor google drive

refuse to use both

if its worth saving, why not buy a terrabyte drive and store it yourself?

Not so bad but you need to do it manually via iTunes which is the same method you'd use going to a non iCloud, cloud storage. iCloud makes it automatic and recovery or transfer of data to a new phone is easy.

I've definitely had external drives fail, so they are hardly bulletproof. I keep all my personal documents on iCloud. Naturally, I don't have a spreadsheet full of identifiable usernames and passwords on there, but I'm not even slightly concerned if Apple got hacked and someone got my very mundane documents.

Count me among those that use neither. I run a TrueNAS server at home and plan to install another off-site for redundancy.

Of course, I’ve been planning that off-site server for a couple years now. I’ve got to get on that before something happens.
