Visa has no plans to block gun purchases on its buying platform so long as the transactions remain legal, according to its top executive.

Competitors like PayPal and Square prohibit their own payment services from being used to facilitate firearm sales. But after a pair of mass shootings over the weekend that left more than 30 people dead, Visa is standing by its policy of permitting those transactions.

“We are guided by the federal laws in a country, and our job is to create and to facilitate fair and secure commerce,” CEO Alfred Kelly told CNBC. “We shouldn’t tell people they can’t purchase a 32-ounce soda. We shouldn’t tell people they can’t buy reproductive drugs.”

A little sanity just seems so out of place these days. Good on them.

Good, as far as it goes.

It assumes the credit card processing company the retailer uses is good to go also.

Case in point: Ammomen was dropped with no warning by its credit card processor, First Data/Card Connect this past July. They wound up completely dark for around 10 days because of those clowns.

Details, from an email I got at the time, being on their customer database:

quote:
Tuesday afternoon our credit card processor [First Data/Card Connect],exited our contract and closed our feed. What this means is that at 5:00 p.m. we were no longer able to sell ammo. No warning, no explanation. Just shut down.

When we finally got through to someone at the processing center to find out what was going on, their response was "We don't like guns and ammo." We requested a 30-90 day extension so that we might have time to find a 2nd amendment friendly processor. They categorically denied an extension. We can only speculate what sparked their decision.

So long as the transactions remain legal? As if anybody buys guns illegally with a credit card. Roll Eyes

I can't say for sure, but I imagine it's not as far fetched as it may sound.

You may have stumbled onto something very important to them that more mention should be made by the gun community. They probably have an exceptionally low loss/fraud rate and they aren't willing to walk away from the profits they bring into VISA.
Also, gun ownership has become much more mainstream in the last decade or so and they don't want to alienate that demographic.

Good grief. A CEO comes out and says the right thing... and there are some who are castigating? Good for VISA and I respect this CEO.
