Ziebart rust proofing of vehicles.

808Ziebart rust proofing of vehicles.
Any members here have any experience with Ziebart rust proofing. My father always used it on his vehicles back in the 80’s. With good results.
Im planning on trying it on a used Chevy pickup.
Comes with a ten year warranty.
My state uses the liquid Salt, brine. A lot in the winter and vehicles in my area have lots of rust.

newtoSig765If the truck is currently (or will be made) completely rust-free, Ziebart is a good thing. It doesn't help if there is rust under the coating, and IIRC makes that situation worse.
Especially with a used vehicle, make sure you wash away all the accumulated road dirt, tar, etc, before you apply the undercoat.

808They claim to neutralize any rust then add the preventative latter.
My father had a 1979 Ford E van and the current owner in the area still drives it rust free.

How used? If it has any rust on it now, the treatment may, for all we know, encapsulate the existing rust and allow the rusting to continue underneath.

I'm not sure what "neutralize" means. Remove the old rust, or keep the existing rust from worsening, or what? I'm skeptical.

808A 2016 with no signs of rust.
Never driven during winter weather to avoid the salt.
I hope to prevent rust in the future.

Continue to not drive it in the winter!

egregoreWill you be able to completely coat, with no missed spots, the
inside the frame? There are any number of holes in a frame for access to wiring harnesses, bolts holding accessories like ABS modules and emission components to the frame rail, etc.

That you know of. Has it been put on a lift and the frame inspected? I've lost count of the number of cars & trucks I've seen with near-pristine bodywork but the undercarriage (whether frame or unit body) rusted out, some completely FUBAR.
If it passes the above inspection, have at it.

newtoSig765It was popular through about the mid-1980's or early 1990's, and honestly, I see them maybe coming back since I'm seeing more-and-more rusted-through cars and trucks here in northern Illinois. At least, the American vehicles. Not so much the Asian stuff, though.
In about 1983 Porsche developed a method for treating metal car body and frame parts that made them rust-resistant, and either sold or gave the method to the entire industry. That about killed Ziebart and its competitors.
They had a good application method, drilling into body parts like doors and fender wells, spraying their gunk in, then plugging the holes. It was effective, done right.

ChowserI know everyone at work with pickups have been doing fluid film for their rustproofing.
Not minority enough! November 05, 2025, 09:04 AM
bendableI never understood how they can rustproof areas that they can't see or touch.
Without dismantling the whole schmeer.
Do you take 60 pre application pictures of areas w/o
Rust and then five years later
Recheck those same 60 areas ?

Lefty SigMy first boss at Ford said a Ziebart treatment plugged the drain holes on a fenderwell on a van he had, it filled up with salty snow melt and rusted out from the inside. Ziebart refunded the treatment cost, not repair cost.
With hot dip galvanized steel, immersion e-coat, and then primer, base coat, and top coat, I don't see any need for aftermarket "rust proofing".
"But you know that tru-coat is put on at the factory. How 'bout them twins?"

Sums up the current paint job on my Midget. Thick & not fantastic application, and poorly prepped/masked.

I second this...or any version of this Woolwax, etc. I am suspicious of anything that forms a hard coating b/c nothing is completely chip proof and stuff will get behind the coating. The semi-fluid rust inhibitors will creep around and you can easily reapply.
