Have a family member who has access to one for sale that might be a pretty nice truck for a good price.

I am looking for a Super duty I could put a flatbed on. This is probably not it. But still a nice serviceable pickup. Has the floor shift 4wd. Is a XLT truck. Has the Trition 5.4 liter V8. Is an automatic. Extra cab not crew cab. Sounds like lower miles just have not got the mileage yet. Truck seems to be in really good condition from what I am being told right now.

Would like to know more about the truck. Any owners out there.

That motor is the 5.4 3v and should be avoided.

The cam phasers don't get enough oil and the motors fail.

quote:
Why Ford phaser fail and rattle?

There are two main reasons why phasers fail - wear inside the cam phasers and wear in the engine, typically it's a combination that causes excessive phaser noise. Wear inside the phaser means the oil cannot be properly controlled and the computer cannot control the variable cam timing. Replacing phaser will sometimes cure this problem but often the fix will only last for a few months. Wear in the engine means not enough oil can make it to the phaser, so even a new phaser cannot operate properly. As the engine wears, more oil is lost though crank, rod and cam bearings with the phasers being the last component to receive oil. Not enough volume is delivered to control the phaser so it basically rattles back and forth.

I have a 2007 xlt 4x4 5.4L FFV that I bought in 2008 when it had 23,000 miles on it. It now has 150,000 miles. No major problems.
After I bought it I read that the factory two piece spark plugs could break off / be a problem, so I bought an after market set of plugs and had the dealership install them. The dealership told me they probably wouldn’t work well but they are still in it.
Drove it to Gunsite from SD last year and slept in the back for a week while taking a class.
Think about up grading once in awhile but just use it for going to the range several times a week and it’s still fine for that.

I had a 2005 F150 Lariat with the 5.4 Triton engine. It was a 4x4 as well. I bought it brand new and drove it for almost 15 years. I sold it a couple of years ago to buy my Colorado.

It was a great truck and never cost me a penny outside of maintenance. It had 80,000 miles one her when I sold it. The problem with that engine was that it had aluminium heads and when you changed out the plugs they almost always stripped out the threads and had to be heli-coiled. But, the manual didn't call out for a plug change until 100,000 miles, so I never had to deal with it. The new owner didn't seem to mind when we discussed that. Gas mileage sucked. I never got better than 15 miles to the gallon which was one of the reasons I decided to sell her.

I’m at 208k on my ‘05 F-150 4x4 and have replaced plugs twice now. Broke a few the first time around, but this last time had no issues. It’s not that you stripped out the heads so much as it is the design of the two piece plug that would cause them to break and leave the threads in the head. Lisle makes a tool to combat this that works well.

As noted the engine coupled with the 4 speed transmission leaves a lot to be desired, but it’s served me well for 16 years now so I can’t complain too much.

Success always occurs in private, and failure in full view.

Complacency sucks…

I'm over 180K miles on my 2006 FX f150 with the 5.4L engine. No engine issues yet.

I had a 2008 Expedition with the 5.4 (which I'd avoid) from new to June 2018. I changed the spark plugs at 95k miles and it made a huge difference in fuel mileage/performance....I noticed a drop of fuel mileage of about 20% at 65k miles. Changing the plugs brought it right back and motor sounded/felt better. No threads were stripped when they were changed, but it is a common problem with these heads.

At 102k miles the cam phasors went bad. It's around $3k to have them done and might as well do the timing chain at the same time. I would avoid the 5.8L 3v. I was extremely pissed because my 2018 expedition was on order and only a month out.

I have just hit 200k miles on my 07' F150 4door 4x4 (5.4L). It has been a great truck for me. Just replaced the timing chain guides and phasers. The timing chain guides broke, so while they are in there fixing that just replace the full timing chain and phaser setup. Runs like a champ now (knock on wood). Have replaced the plugs 2 or 3 times, just because wanted to make sure I did not have the broken plug problem. The longer they stay in, the more chance you have of them being a problem to remove.

You take care of it, and it will take care of you for a good while. Gas mileage does leave a lot to be desired. I average 13mpg. Ooftah!

Thanks guys, probably one to steer away from as it is not really the rig I am after and while not a bad rig. Not a gem either from the sound of it. Thanks again guys.
