Got an email from GB today that they're about to hit my card for $55. No mention at all of what this is for. Well, there's a reference number, but that shows nothing in a search on GB. I last listed and sold something a month ago, fees already paid. I have no active listings, no recent ones, no recent purchases. Their "help" tabs are not much help, as the list of dropdown choices doesn't include my issue. I got some emails after entering my reference number and even had to make up a fake item number to make them go through. But no human has responded yet. I'm leaning toward calling my CC company to dispute this charge. What to do here?

Did this email really come from Gunbroker? Maybe a phishing, or whatever it's called, scammy spammer deal. Check the email for who really sent the email. In my system, I just hover the mouse pointer over it and shows me the real one, you may have to click on it to see it. .

Yes, it's from them. Says to click on "account status" and it's a hotlink. It takes me to my GB account, no money owed, no recent sales. No mention of this $55. I'm thinking it will take a CC dispute to get a response from them. Hell, eBay and PayPal are way easier to get a live human.

Might be for a sales tax payment.

That sounds like it could be it. But I'd like an explanation next to it or a response from their support. Does that bill really come a month after the listing ends?

So let it be written, so let it be done... |
I would bet it is a tax statement, and yes, they come a month after the fact. GB is not great individual sellers anymore. Their fees have gone through the roof, and forcing sellers to be their tax collection man sucks. And they find new fees to add every month it seems. And don't expect a reply to any support requests - I've made several over the years, never had any kind of a reply to any of them. eBay is also fee heavy, but at least they manage the taxes for you and allow any seller to accept credit cards through their system. And eBay support will actually respond to your inquiries, not that eBay is some kind of awesome site. It has its own issues. 'veritas non verba magistri'

Stop payment on your credit card. Let them come to you. They at least owe you an explanation.

I was fairly active on GB up until 7 or 8 years ago. I've never sold anything there, but I bought quite a few things. I never paid one penny of sales tax there, never paid GB any fees for anything, but now I hear that since they were bought out, the new owner is damn greedy and it keeps getting worse. Yeah, gee, sounds like a great place now. You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.

Broken record here. I keep touting the Virtual Cards, as issued by Capital One (and some card issuers). In this instance, a Virtual Card could be created that is only valid at Gun Broker, and the card can be locked or unlocked at the user's discretion, by a simple mouse click on the card issuer's website. Locking the card would cause any attempt to use it, to be declined, in which case Gun Broker would likely contact the customer. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

CITI, too. I've turned off a card and it definitely gets the vendor's attention. Gunbroker is a shadow of what they once were. Harshest Dream, Reality

Seven or eight yrs ago no one paid sales tax on Internet purchases. I hate that we pay it now, but it ain't the online marketplaces' fault.

I must update this because GB support just got back to me. They sent a breakdown of fees from a sale I made over a month ago. It looks correct, though so unnecessarily complicated. I guess I'm satisfied.
