What a day, today is my 60th birthday and it's also my sisters birthday, but we're not twins. Happy Birthday to Sis!

I received a phone call awhile ago from the Oklahoma Blood Institute, the lady said they need me to come in and donate as soon as I can. My blood type is one of the less common and I'm CMV negative.

I can't explain this very well, but being CMV negative (I've never had CMV, a common virus) my blood can be given to newborn babies since they don't have an immune system yet. A transfusion of CMV positive given to a new baby will most likely kill it, as I understand it. Other people who have a weak immune system can be given CMV negative blood.

Apparently stocks are really low right now and it's time to get the calls out to those who can help.

It's my pleasure, I'm a lucky guy to be able to assist.

Yep, I'm O negative (universal donor) and CMV negative. Got my 5 gallon pin a few years ago, but I haven't been in to donate in a while.

As a recipient of blood during surgery I tried to pay it back. First medication I told the lady and she said "no thanks".

Years ago, when I worked at one of the Philly med schools, a co-worker had a rare blood type. I said to him that he could probably make some money selling his blood for research. He wouldn't do it. But when the hospital across the street would call and ask if he would donate, he was there in a flash.
