Void Where Prohibited

| Today, I think this is true if you are self-employed or work at a small business. In the large business/corporate world, the raises and advancements go to those that play office politics well.

Three Generations of Service

Not in my experience. I was hired as a General Maintenance worker at the cannery. Starting wage $14/hr. The other GM guys replaced the odd motor, did preventive maintenance on conveyor lines, basic plumbing repairs and welding. I did all that for three years, plus the work of an industrial electrician, IT for the admin computers and phone system, tweaked PLC programming, designed and built machine controls and helped with the implementation of the SAP module for maintenance. Also was the Assistant Maintenance Manager with all the associated paperwork and meetings. Ending wage: $14/hr. Fuck 'em.

| The right thing to do is to make sure your employer compensates you fairly for your effort. Or find one who will. Not wait until that employer hands fairness to you as a gift. The compensation makes it fair. Not the hope that an employer will eventually make it fair. Telling someone that they must earn fairness is the bullshit that people use to underpay an employee. That is not to say that all employees should be compensated equally. Only fairly. |
