Sandmann attorneys Todd McMurtry and Lin Wood filed a $275 million lawsuit against CNN in March of last year in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky.

“CNN was probably more vicious in its direct attacks on Nicholas than The Washington Post. And CNN goes into millions of individuals’ homes,” Wood told Fox News’ Mark Levin last year. “CNN couldn’t resist the idea that here’s a guy with a young boy, that Make America Great Again cap on. So they go after him.”

Sandmann also filed lawsuits against The Washington Post and NBC Universal, each for $250 million or over, and is reportedly planning to “sue Gannett, owners of The Enquirer.”

Good news is I don't think he would have settled for chump change. Likely several million in his pockets.

My guess is it's around $3-5 Million. Its the first settlement that I know of, so CNN probably got off pretty easy. Meaning they would likely take any substantial number to put money in their pockets. Not low balled, but I would be shocked if they settled for more than $10M.

CNN gets off easy, the kid have a win and money in his pocket - he and his lawyers will likely wait out the rest unless the settlements look good or wins probable.

Pure conjecture on my part though - we will likely never know unless Convington High School gets a $50M makeover and Sandmann is the donor.

Of course there was a non-disclosure clause in the deal. They are routine in settlements - defendants don't want other plaintiffs to be encouraged and don't want to look guilty when they settle. (And settling defendants sometimes aren't guilty, but settle for lots of other reasons.) The deal wasn't made public because there is a confidentiality clause. I've included them in most commercial settlements I've written for paying defendants.

There is no telling how much he got paid. Maybe it turned out his case wasn't so hot. You just can't guess unless you know how the lawsuit was progressing. The amount of the settlement depends on how good the case was.

Can I assume that Sandmann's side was looking for a judgement and a precedent? Some non-public settlement accomplishes nothing and makes the plaintiff just look greedy. I'd think that was the last thing they want. I'm not so up on those involved but some months back Mark Levin talked to a lead Sandmann lawyer on Levin's Sunday Fox News show. The guy has a history of targeting the kind of stuff CNN pulled here, the lawyer knows there is much more at work here than one guy's complaint.

Still, it’s eerie when Wood affixes his interviewer with his intense green eyes and calmly relates how he came home at age 16 one evening to discover that his father had killed his mother.

“I wasn’t surprised. I grew up in a life of domestic abuse. It was a brutal life,” he says of his childhood in Macon, Ga. Both of his parents were troubled alcoholics who were frequently violent toward one another.

Wood says he checked his mother’s pulse and, realizing she was dead, called the police.

“I remember walking down the driveway and driving off in my mother’s car,” Wood says. “I was going to stay with a friend, but first I stopped in the park and kind of had a little heart-to-heart with myself. I said, ‘You’re in charge of your life now. You’ve got to do something with it.’ That doesn’t mean that I wasn’t affected by it emotionally. I just knew that I had a horrible situation and I had to deal with it. I’ve been fairly independent ever since.”

Wood and his sister, who is two years older, were known for their academic achievements despite their tragic home life. The community raised money, and Wood hired attorneys Hank O’Neal and Manley F. Brown. “I know they agreed to represent my dad for a much lower fee because of a desire to help my sister and myself,” Wood says. “Somebody stepping in to help me like that was a great comfort, and I try to remember that when I help my clients.”

Wood’s father pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and served two years. Meanwhile, Wood continued on through high school, Mercer University and Mercer Law School. He supported himself by working at a men’s clothing store, as a sports writer at the Macon News and as a hospital orderly.

They just finished one of those. The entire front of the building is new, as is the stadium behind it. Not really new but only a couple of years old. Drive by it some time and see for yourself.
