My grandfather would say, "buy the best tools you can afford".

A plaque in his office read "A foolish man scrimps when he buys a pair of shoes, and his feet will pay for it every time he wears them. A wise man will splurge when he buys a pair of shoes, and his feet will thank him every time he wears them".

"Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women. When it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court can save it....While it lies there, it needs no constitution, no law, no court to save it"

My Dad always says, "How do you want to be treated when it's your turn to ask for forgiveness?" It has had a large impact on my life.

general wisdom: Never pass up an opportunity to piss, you don't know when you will have another chance.

"You can't make molasses out of Shit"

I was on a Soccer tour trip of Portugal where we played 8 games. Near the end of the trip I was staying at my Coaches flat on the coast looking out at the ocean.

He was BBQing some fresh anchovies we had just picked up down at the dock and telling me that I should become a Coach.

Well about two cold beers into the conversation, he dropped the above words of wisdom to me as to the quality of players you have.

My CUT.
It took me years to understand what Dad was telling me. But it is true, you will go broke trying to buy up all the “deals”
Take your time, do your research, choose wisely.
And it’s not just financial. The same applies to any relationship, either financial or romantic.
The deals you MISS don’t hurt you. It’s the deals you MAKE that can break you.

"You can tell a lot about a man by how he treats someone who can do him no good." That's kept me in check many times as I aspire to treat others better than I get it sometimes.

I was at a meeting one time and the speaker got up to speak. He was an older gentleman in his later '60's, and was speaking about veterinary software integration. He stood for a moment and then said "Before I begin, I'd like to share something with you that I have found to be extremely beneficial in my life: when you have the opportunity to either be right or be kind, always choose to be kind. It will serve you well." I've failed miserably at that in life, but I do try to at least pleasantly smile and walk away (or shy away from any comment if in internet form) when confronted with the opportunity to instead insult and mix it up.

It is often better to ask forgiveness than permission.

Expect nothing and you will not be disappointed.

Your rights end at the start of the other guys nose. - My dad used to tell me this when I was little and it proved to be a useful yet challenging reminder in many situations.

Cheers~

My very polite and proper English teacher, grandmother used to tell us all kinds of things. I can remember several:

1.“ Always buy the best shoes you can afford, your feet will thank you.“

2. “Some people need killing.”

To hear her say that was just flabbergasting, when I told my mom about it, my mother explained that older folks know a thing or two about life and to pay attention to them.

3. “War is hell”

she had taken us to an art gallery in Tampa and we were in front of a huge painting of redcoats in a battle with dead and dying soldiers, she was crying and I asked her why. Later I would find she had served in WWII and had one time helped clean the wreckage of a plane crash including bodies.

My Grandfather: "Learn how to work on the your car and you'll be able to afford any car you buy." Told me that when I bought my first car. Made sense the first I needed to do some maintenance on it.

My dad: "You'd argue with a brass monkey."

Any problem in the universe can be solved with a sufficient application of high explosive.
