A Grateful American |
Some things never change. The sound of an American made big block V8 with a spread bore carb at WOT. The idiots that never move over. The ultimate ending of dumbass vs Motorola. The fact that Scandinavian's always seem to be the people driving in a fleeing vehicle. That they always win silver bracelets and an all expense taxpayer vacation the the Graybar Hotel. And K-9 unit or not, someone in the pursuit vehicle is gonna be barking like a Boss! 'murica! "the meaning of life, is to give life meaning" ✡ Ani Yehudi אני יהודי Le'olam lo shuv לעולם לא שוב!

Dances With Tornados |
I think that Sheriff Buford T Justice, the Bandit in the Trans Am, Snowman driving the 18 wheeler, and Hal Needham (director and writer) and Frog (Sally Field) might should have something to say about this as it's from 1977. IMO Jackie Gleason absolutely stole this movie. Burt and Sally and Jerry were amazing in their roles but Jackie owned this movie. Go watch Smokey and the Bandit again. Pass the popcorn. Sorry to trash out your thread. I'll let myself out now, 'scuse me. .

Those damned Southern Baptists!!! "If you’re a leader, you lead the way. Not just on the easy ones; you take the tough ones too…” – MAJ Richard D. Winters (1918-2011), E Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne "Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil... Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel." - Isaiah 5:20,24

More cops on that highway then anyone else! That will never happen again. Revolvers and shotguns too. not autos and ARs. Little bit of potential crossfire casualty potential there, too. "I vowed to myself to fight against evil more completely and more wholeheartedly than I ever did before. . . . That’s the only way to pay back part of that vast debt, to live up to and try to fulfill that tremendous obligation." Where was this? At the end of the video that patrol car was cooking! _________________________________________________________________________ “A man’s treatment of a dog is no indication of the man’s nature, but his treatment of a cat is. Fighting the good fight |
Ah, old school police tactics. "Okay, guys... Here's the plan: When this pursuit ends, let's all jump out of our cars, rush right up to the suspect vehicle, and make a circle around it while pointing our guns at each other. Then once the driver gets out, I'll try to cuff him one-handed while pushing the barrel of my revolver into his ear with my other hand the whole time."

Prepared for the Worst, Providing the Best |
Unfortunately, that's not exclusive to videos from the '80s . I will say that squad cars, light bars, and duty guns were so much cooler looking back then, though, if not more reliable. Gotta love the steam pouring out from under the hood of that LTD or Caprice at the end of the pursuit, lol. My Durango doesn't do that...but the brakes start smoking after about 3 applications at speed .

Speaking of Smokey and the Bandit. A friend on mine owned a local movie theatre. I was complaining about the movies being shown. He explained that the only movies that were profitable were of the Smokey and the Bandit type. He said he could show Smokey over and over and stil make money. I don't believe the films won any Academy awards.

What kind of set up was that? A VHS/Betamax recorder in the trunk?

Our policy has been no more than two units actively pursuing. If one unit starts it and another jumps in, that second unit takes over on the radio. Other units can assist by clearing intersections, but mainly trying to setup a spike strip. Also, if a pursuit comes in from another jurisdiction, our dispatch has to ask the other agency if they are requesting assistance before we can other than by clearing intersections. Lastly, our policy doesn’t allow for the PIT maneuver, nor roadblocks. It is cool watching these agencies coming together to box in the stolen vehicle in the video. Just really glad the lead didn’t start flying because it was almost like a Polish firing squad there. Retired Texas Lawman

From the sound of it the camera/chase car was a Chevy, nothing moans like a Quadrajet at WOT. I suspect it was one of the 307 budget patrol models because at one point he's yelling "get moving you piece of shit" at the car climbing that on ramp. The 307 was a decent taxicab engine but it had nothing on top, my vague memory is they were rated at 140 HP. As for the car steaming, another feature of the budget Patrol models with the minimum V8 was a small radiator and IIRC an antique pelletized catalytic converter. I can remember some news reports where these cars were dumping so much gas into the converters at WOT that if you pulled onto the median they would start a grass fire. BTW, there were better options available, if the right boxes were checked you could get a Pursuit model with the Corvette 350 running a Q-Jet, a laminar flow Cat from the Vette, a much larger radiator, oil cooler, and a pretty darned good suspension for the era. I've stopped counting.

Love when they slammed his head into the roof putting him into the back seat. Had to rewind it and watch twice because it really made my day.

Who the heck steals an 1984 Olds 98, which did have the 307 v8, with the whopping 150 hp and a top speed of 106.

If you called for back up or assistance nothing beat hearing the throaty carb on a mid to late 70's Plymouth Fury from a block or two away. You knew the cavalry was coming before it even arrived. Then it arrived with two bright red Micky Mouse lights on with two fellow uniforms toting straight hickory stick batons, a Sap and S/W.38's revolvers. Basically, Adam-12 time warp. The old days...
