Week 3 Wrap-up:
  • My Boilermakers took down their SEC opponent, Mizzou, as I predicted.
  • UofM, Rutgers, Iowa, MN, WI, tOSU, PSU, and NWU all won the games they were supposed to win.
  • The Illini and Cornhuskers got beat by non-Power 5 opponents
  • IU's game was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma complications

    Kudos:
  • Rutgers' D held their opponent to 145 yards of total offense
  • The Golden Gophers had two running backs get over 100 yards rushing, and one, McCrary, had 3 TDs
  • The Badgers' Hornibrook tossed 4 TDs, 256 yds passing, and a QB rating of 277.4
  • Purdue's D held their SEC opponent to 203 yds of total offense, and their O held on to the ball for nearly 44 minutes
  • The Buckeye's O put up 586 yards of total offense with only 23:03 time of possession while their D held the Black Knights to 19 yards of passing
  • The Nittany Lions' McSorley threw for 309 yards and 4 TDs with a 248.5 QB rating, and overall the offense put up 526 yards on a measely 21:13 time of possession.
  • The Wildcats' Thorson threw for 370 yards and 2 TDs with a QB rating of 202.3, and overall the O had 678 yards.

tatortodd, time of possession is not an indicator of who is winning the game these days.

In the old days, yes these days...not really.
Oregon a few years ago was quick strike team and rarely dominated in time of possession.
I have not seen the stats, but would guess teams like Air Force, Navy and Army usually have the ball longer than their opponents. They rarely go undefeated. Many teams can score in just a few plays. Louisville, Houston the last few years and even Clemson last year were quick strike teams. I know the announcers on tv talk about that stat, but at the end of the game it always seems to be the team with the most points that wins the game.

If Michigan "plays down" to the Boilermakers this week, I think that they, the boilermakers, will have a chance. If Michigan plays to their potential, then not so much.

Either way, I think the first half will be close and depending on Purdue's conditioning and run defense, they can keep it close. Not so worried about Michigan's passing ability.

It will be a 4th quarter game.

    Really?!? C'mon

Huskers just fired the Athletic Director so the handwriting is on the wall for head coach Mike Riley.

    Week 4:
4 of 7 games interest me this week as they are either a Big Ten match-ups, or a quality non-conference opponent:
  • Rut at NE at 3:30 EDT on Btn/btn2 - the Cornhuskers are favored by 11 to 12.5 depending on which odds service you believe. Two programs in disarray face off, but after much ugliness Nebraska will hand Rutgers their 15th straight Big Ten Loss and cover.
  • Walmart Wolverines at Purdue at 4:00 EDT on Fox - the Wolverines are favored by 10 to 10.5 depending on which odds service you believe. It's been a rare event to be able to write this the past 8 years, but Purdue has the higher powered offense which will be an interesting matchup vs UofM's stingy defense. It'll be just as interesting to see if Purdue's D can shutdown UofM's stagnant offense. The Wolverines better come to play or the Spoilermakers will make an appearance. UofM wins without covering.
  • PSU at IA at 7:30 EDT on ABC - the Nittany Lions are favored by 12 to 12.5 depending on which odds service you believe. Both teams are 3-0, but PSU has been more impressive in their games. I think Vegas has this one under called, and PSU wins and easily covers.
  • Yoder Dame and the Fighting Amish at MSU at 8:00 EDT on Fox - the Amish are favored by 3 to 3.5 depending on which odds service you believe. MSU is coming off a bye week, and ND is coming off a lopsided against a week opponent. I'm going with Sparties pulling off the upset.

If you're not watching, the UofM at Purdue game is very exciting. Purdue leads 10-7 at half-time, and both teams are playing very good D.

The UofM at Purdue game was a good game for 3 quarters:
  • 0-0 after 1st quarter
  • Purdue lead 10-7 at half
  • UofM lead 14-10 at end of 3rd

Michigan scored 2 in the 4th and won 28-10. It got a little ugly in the 4th quarter with some dumb, cheap shots by two of Purdue's defensive leaders (one ejected).

Michigan's D is tough as they held Purdue to 187 yards of total offense, and a stingy 1.4 yards per carry.

Hats off to UofM for the win. I'm still excited that my Boilermakers were competitive with a Top 10 team for the first time in many years. Definitely a lot for Coach B to build upon.

    Week 4 Wrap-up:
Interesting games in the Big Ten:
  • Rut at NE at 3:30 EDT on Btn/btn2 - As predicted, a lot of ugliness before Nebraska pulled away to give Rutgers their 15th straight Big Ten Loss. Riley gets to keep his job for at least another week.
  • Walmart Wolverines at Purdue at 4:00 EDT on Fox - as previously posted, excellent back and forth game for 3 quarters. Michigan has a ton of depth and it made a difference in the 4th quarter. Hats off to UofM for the win.
  • PSU at IA at 7:30 EDT on ABC - looks like I missed the best game of the week. Congrats to the Nittany Lions.
  • Yoder Dame and the Fighting Amish at MSU at 8:00 EDT on Fox - the Sparties shot themselves in the foot early and often, and ND took full advantage of it. I should've switched over to the PSU game after the first quarter.
  • IU and tOSU both took care of uncompetitive non-conference opponents as expected
  • The Terps were the surprise of the week with both losing and what was previously considered to be a high-powered offense held to 10 points and 197 total yards.

    Kudos:
  • tOSU's Barret for tossing 5 TDs
  • IU's Ellison for rushing for 186 yards and 3 TDs
  • UofM's stingy D for holding a good offense to 187 yards and 1.4 yards per carry
  • PSU's Barkely for 211 yards of rushing, 94 yards receiving, and a TD

As an Iowa fan both proud and shocked by the Hawkeyes yesterday. Gave up 500+ and Penn State ran 2 to 1 number of plays. As bad as the stats look the defense played a great game
    until the last play.
Barkley is a true talent both speed and power watch out Big 10 East.
As bad as the Iowa offense looked Stanley looked better as the game went on and neither the offense or defense looked like they quit.

Yeah, I thought Iowa would not show up like they did.

On the other hand, Maryland did lose to a really good team.

    Week 5:
This weekend features 6 Big Ten match-ups (2 teams have bye weeks):
  • Congrats to Nebraska for taking Illinois behind the wood shed last night. The Cornhuskers's QB, Lee, had 246 yards passing and 3 TDs with zero INTs. The Cornhusker's D held the Illini to 199 yards total offense and a stingy 2.5 yards per carry.
  • MD @ MN at noon EDT on Fox Sports 1 - The undefeated Gophers are 13 to 13.5 point favorites depending on which odds service you believe. The Gophers will benefit greatly from MD's loss last week and know how to shutdown MD's offense. The Terps have trouble playing D, and the Gophers will capitalize on it. Gophers win and cover.
  • NWU @ #10 WI at noon EDT on ABC - The undefeated Badgers are 15 to 16 point favorites depending on which odds service you believe. At the beginning of the season, I thought this match-up would decide the Big Ten West, but their losided loss to Duke caused me to reconsider this. The Badgers are a much better team than Duke, and all of the starting youngsters on the Wildcats defense will get steamrolled. Badgers win and cover.
  • IU @ #4 PSU at 3:30 EDT on BTN - The undefeated Nittany Lions are 18 to 18.5 point favorites depending on which odds service you believe. PSU will take advantage of IU's second worst D in the Big Ten, and Barkley has another banner week of rushing and receiving. PSU wins and covers.
  • IA @ MSU at 4:00 EDT on Fox - Likely to be the best Big Ten game this weekend. The Sparties are unanimously 4 point favorites. The Hawkeyes have already had two tight games this year, and really gave PSU everything they could handle. On the other hand, MSU got whooped by ND and the WMU game was closer than the scoreboard indicated. Hawkeyes pull off the upset.
  • #11 tOSU @ Rut at 7:30 EDT on BTN - The Buckeyes are 28.5 to 29.5 point favorites depending on which odds service you believe. Not sure how this lopsided match-up earned a prime time viewing slot, but it will give Buckeye fans a low stress Saturday night. The only questions are whether the O can put up 600 yards and the D can pitch a shutout? Buckeyes win and cover.
