Terrific, genius. Just terrific. Spewing all that outrageous bullshit, just to hear yourself talk.

You'll get no sympathy from me.

Alex Jones trial: Infowars host must pay Sandy Hook victim Jesse Lewis' family $4 million

I despise people who make such fantastic, clearly false claims.

I can't figure out what his lawyer was doing. It turns out during discovery this guy turned over 3 years worth of phone records and texts that the opposing council didn't ask for. Basically proved he lied under oath and knew it. Attorney didn't try to get any of it excluded. Just sat there and let it all happen.

^^^ not an attorney but have some experience in civil litigation. Typically, the opposing counsel uses weasel words (see italics) in addition to specifics. For example turn over x, y, z, and all relevant texts and emails.

You and your counsel know they’re subpoenaing your wireless company and e-mail provider, and have to make judgement calls on the weasel words. Everything you leave out opposing is likely whining to the judge.

Alex Jones is not the friend of American citizens who love their country. We get lumped in with insane loudmouths like this. Postulating conspiracies that no rational person would even consider as being true to any degree- let's leave that kind of stuff for the leftists in this nation. It's a perfect fit for them.

I wouldn't say Alex Jones is a friend to American citizens who hate our country.
Certainly paranoid and delusional at times.
Mostly his personality and the fact he voices it that irritate many.
Yeah, a lot is crazy with crazy theories but it is up to anyone who listens to accept or reject.
I am not defending his views but just the right to express it or anyone who hates him/views to do the same.

Alex Jones is a modern day carnival barker, along with countless others on both sides of the political spectrum.
The wide reach of the internet and social media has enabled them so they can spread their words wide and far at very little cost.
Sad to see how many gullible people actually believe some or all of this crap and good to see a public beat-down of one of the more visible ones, and while under oath too. I know it won't happen but it would be good to see him stripped of ever cent he's "earned" and begging on a street corner.

When does the MSM start paying out 4mil every time they lie?

If Alex Jones had to pay out large sums each time he "lied" as you put it, he'd be bankrupt in one single day.

And let's not behave as if the mainstream media does not get punished for their lies from time. Ask Nick Sandman about that.

I do not wish to be associated with people like Alex Jones, but you can bet that rational conservatives are considered by those who oppose us to be no different than raving paranoiacs like Jones.

Never liked Jones, nor did I give him any credit. For every 'insightful or, cleaver' thing he would say, there would be three more outrageous and over-the-top statements. He needs to go away and the people that follow him need to get new friends and wake the hell up. Like a televangelist, he's not helping anybody or, anyone.

I have never watched/heard Alex Jones other than a few short clips. (and the only thing I recall was the bit about "something in the water turns the frogs gay".

I have a friend that does consume Jones Porn, and when I told him, he was the "Paul Begley"(televangelist hack) of the independent News/Opinion world, he got pissed.

That style is such hype and salacious drama that I would rather endure a root canal without local, than 5 seconds of their voice.

Hey, Alex... Stop helping.

Jones is undoubtedly a grifting loudmouth buffoon, but as far as I am concerned this is a 1st Amendment infringement, and not the only one.
They started de-platforming and doxxing the weirdos out on the fringes of the right and have been moving steadily inwards towards the center ever since. The slippery slope seems pretty steep to me.
The lefty judge in this case passed a summary judgement of guilty and wouldn't allow Jones to go to a jury trial.

Was it a First Amendment infringement when CNN and their ilk condemned Nick Sandman with their lies?

From the linked article:
quote:
The parents testified Tuesday about how they've endured a decade of trauma, inflicted first by the murder of their son and what followed: gun shots fired at a home, online and phone threats, and harassment on the street by strangers. They said the threats and harassment were all fueled by Jones and his conspiracy theory spread to his followers via his website Infowars.

"It seems so incredible to me that we have to do this — that we have to implore you, to punish you — to get you to stop lying," Lewis told Jones.

Jones acknowledged during the trial that the attack was "100% real" and that he was wrong to have lied about it.

Yeah, I’ll just be waiting for the other sides talking heads get the same treatment for inciting the BLM riots, pregnancy center arsons, harassment of Supreme Court judges, congressional baseball game shooting, or any of the crap Trump received.

I am not positive but I don't think Nick Sandmann ever won a judgement in court, CNN and WAPO settled. I know his suits against ABC, CBS, NY Times, Rolling Stone, USA TODAY, the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Detroit Free Press, the Louisville Courier Journal and the Tennessean were all dismissed.
To me the line between libel and protected speech under the 1st amendment is a but fuzzy. I would say Jones crossed the libel line, but I would also say all the media organizations above crossed it as well. There seems to be a double standard in play in the courts. (but what else is new)

The Hell you say.

That still doesn't make it right- what Jones did- running his fat mouth nonstop with the most ridiculous conspiracy theories. He needs to try being reasonable. That will never happen, but this court case will calm his ass down quite a bit.

Imagine if you had a child murdered in Sandy Hook, and then you heard this asshole making his claims for years and years. How might that affect you? Your life would already have become a nightmare, and then you have to put up with that shit? Inexcusable

I am puzzled: What does the First Amendment have to do with this case?

As has been pointed out here many times before, the Constitution and its amendments pertain to governmental action, and specifically limits on the Congress’ restrictions of free speech. And even then, speech is sometimes subject to legal restrictions. If I bring suit against someone for libel or slander and a court agrees with me, that’s not a violation of the First Amendment. This seems to be somewhat different because the statements were not directed against the plaintiffs directly, so I assume that the basis for the award was that the statements nevertheless caused them personal harm. I am not an attorney and know very little about whatever legal principles may be involved, and it will be interesting to see how the case is decided on appeal, but I can see how a court might accept the argument.

What say the lawyers?

Jones is an odious gasbag who has promulgated a bunch of insane theories, and it certainly seems the case against him for libel here is quite strong (enough for a summary judgement of guilty, which I would assume must meet a very high bar in order to not open the case up for immediate appeal).
I am still concerned by the 1st amendment implications for folks on the right as it seems the courts are much more likely to put their thumb on the scale for people/corporations on the left in libel cases. I have been accused of being extreme in my support of both the 1st and 2nd Amendments.

The $4.1 million was the compensatory damages. The jury now deliberates punitive damages.

IAMNAL (I'm A Monkey Not a Lawyer) but I agree the 1stA and government restricting or taking actions against the people who speak against the government and such, not a blanket coverall that anyone can say anything and it be permitted if it causes harm or damage to another (slander, false accusation, etc.)
