Mostly just for fun. Can't do this at a range or a club, but on 100 acres of private property you can do what you want. I have no training so the extra half second to bring it up to see the sights, I don't know.
But to shoot a pistol (or two at the same time) at water bottles at 50 feet or a mini 14 at 75 yards is a blast.
I've got fairly good at it. And I'm not a quick draw artist, don't want to shoot off my toe.

Yep, I have tried it and it didn't turned out good. I've watched so much "Gunsmoke" I thought it would be easy.

When I was a cop we fired 2 from 3 yards, strong hand only.

We were told to extend the arm fully, but you could send 2 from just clearing the holster then extend the arm. I saw our lead FAI do exactly that once, and it reminded me of my CG shooting.

When I was in the Coast Guard we did 2 from the holster, you drew, locked your elbow to your side and sent them, you could see the 1st one and adjust your left right by turning or up/down by moving the forearm.

With my 6 guns I do.
I can snatch it, fan it and hit a steel.
I can hit an 10" steel 25 yards from the hip.

Live fire at close range just a bit in classes etc.

Dry fire with a laser at slightly longer range more so.

At distance, no. I don’t see a practical/safe use for this. (I know, I know you don’t get to pick your gunfight etc. but for me personally the point stands).

I do as well with my SAA. And, occasionally I'll practice with my carry pistol...if for no other reason than just to get a feel for it.

El Paso Saddlery - great leatherworks. Customer for about 50 years....

I've got a different model from them, and while I like it, it took a ridiculous amount of time (and money) to get it made and shipped. Your's looks nice.

Mine was long even back in the day - it's a modified speed rig - but I don't think they do custom work now. You want long and expensive, get a Milt Sparks in something besides cow leather...

3, 5, 7, and out to 10 yard line.
10 is a little rough these days, groups are sloppy. Much easier when Uncle Sam was providing the ammo.

Started with a revolver, now I’m 98% semi auto.

This was part of our yearly qual course. Clear the holster, gun kept at hip level and slightly canted to the right and fire two shots center of mass, from about three yards. An advanced variant was to start closer to the target, with your off hand touching it. Verbal commands, push off, step back, draw and fire two from the hip center of mass.

If you mean shooting from retention, I thought it’s a pretty normal thing - and probably “good” out to 3-4 yards. (I shot an IDPA match like this, and we were all surprised that we could “clear” the dining table pretty easily.)

Exactly. Training to rapidly draw and shoot handguns from retention at very short distances has merit.

But firing from the hip at longer distances - especially with rifles - is just playing around at the range and turning bullets into smoke and noise. Not that there's anything wrong with that if the goal is purely fun, but it's not practice/training, and certainly not something to be relied upon in the real world.

As an armed citizen or a LEO, you are accountable for the consequences of every round you fire. This isn't the military where you can fire in the general direction of the enemy (or even where the enemy might be) just to suppress them. As a result, purposeful aimed fire for each and every round is necessary, unless you're in a situation like the abovementioned close distances where a shot "from the hip" is practically guaranteed to hit.

Hard to do on any kind of formal, supervised range, even on those that "holster-qualify" people. Might this be a good use for some kind of laser training aids?

Circa 1990, Petersen's Handguns, as it was then known, had an article by a guy who taught retention shooting totally dry-fire in front of a full-length mirror. I don't think this would work. You'll always hit the guy in the mirror looking back at you, because it's you. (Massad Ayoob, in an article a few months later, also thought so - he called it "ballistic masturbation.")*

Before I retired from being a firearms instructor for a Armored Truck company I had point shooting as a part of qualifications.
2 shots from a draw, one handed,from close retention, repeated 3 times at a target 1 yard away.Yelling OFF as they fired.
I thought this would actually be the most common shooting scenario for a Armored truck messenger.
They are the prey and usually won't know they are under attack until they are under attack from ambush and have hands on them or have already been assaulted ( hit, shot, stabbed).
Its the fastest you will ever get your firearm into a fight where your assailant is too close to put your gun out were it could be grabbed, you will most likely only have one arm available to fight with because your weak side arm is probably carrying something heavy or you are pushing a two wheeler.
