I have my ResMed Airsense 10 plugged into a CyberPower CP1000PFCLCD UPS unit which sports a UB1290 12V 9Ah battery. Works great for surge protection and short term power outages.

But each year we have outages that run multiple hours to a couple days. Having been on CPAP since 1997 I find I absolutely can not sleep without mine so longer outages without backup mean sleeplessness.

Recently did a lot of research on the issue and found some solid advice which provides an effective and less costly alternative to "dedicated" CPAP backup power units.

All this said I have yet to spring for an AGM U1 or other long term backup system.
Thought I'd start a thread to see what others have tried and found satisfactory.

I have what is generically refers to as a solar generator. 325w I believe.

If I put the cpap into its most efficient mode it’ll last about 20~ hrs.

The battery is about the size of a loaf of bread. Has outlets for 12 volt (use this for optimum time) 2 120v and a couple USB ports.

Many of the backup type batteries are small enough to pass airline rules.

Yes but that needs to be combined with other stuff as suggested in the link in my opening post. A battery, battery trickle charger, and a battery storage box.

Still seems the best solution was outlined in the link in my opening post. A good sized "golf cart" type battery with a trickle charger, storage box, machine specific DC converter, and appropriate connectors.

The one thing I keep reading about any sort of battery backup/emergency power for a CPAP machine is that it’s just not possible to do the humidifier and/or heated hose so that’s something you’ll have to consider as well. If you’re used to breathing humidified air through a CPAP, can you do without for days or weeks?

It is possible but using those CPAP features can increase the power demand / draw by 2X to 4X!

A friend went to wallymart and purchased a battery jump pack in the automotive section.

It's a larger unit, but very portable and not too heavy, also has the other stuff like built in light, air compressor, usb port and cigarette lighter type charger, etc. IIRC the brand was Schumacher, and they've been around a very long time.

He said he is not able to run the humidifier while on battery power, so he just turns the humidifier option off. He says it's not an issue for him.

He said he gets a at least one nights sleep, 8 or 9 hours, on a charge and probably 1/2 to almost a whole other night before it needs recharging.

IIRC he paid just a few bucks over a hundred bucks for it, and this was probably 2 years ago, so prices may have gone up a few shekels.

He's happy with it, and he has the ability to recharge it with solar if the need arises (RV parked there with solar on the roof).

FWIW, it's certainly a grab n go thing.

I was using simple primative CPAP about 1995-2005 with no heaters etc. I RV camped many times a year and relied on a plain 12V deep cycle battery that usually was recharged by 2 or 3 days in camp. Did have a back-up 12V if needed, by plugg in into a separate socket.

Went 1 week or more several times to test the theory, never any failures.

I have a CPAP/UPS arrangement similar to the OP.

If our power goes out I'll be awakened by the alarm on the UPS, shut down the humidifier in the CPAP (reducing power consumption to max the UPS time), shut the alarm off, and go back to sleep.

If we have a power outage lasting more than one day I'll recharge the UPS every day from our generator.

If I had to go beyond that, I'd get AGM batteries and solar panels. I don't need lightweight and convenient (and expensive!) lithium all-in-one units for here at the house.

That MaxOak comes up often as a recommended solution @ ~$260 if you're not going to assemble a DIY AGM U1 setup.

While turning the humidifier heater off will help, best way to stretch whatever backup power source is to use a low draw CPAP to start with.

Lots of variables, but the power adapter for an AirSense 10 is rated at 90W. Of course it doesn’t use all that, but depending on pressure setting etc. the humidifier only accounts for about 2/3 of the power at max setting (based on ResMed info).

My travel CPAP is a ResMed AirMini Autoset. The standard power adapter for it is only 27W. It does not have a humidifier, but adds humidity to air via a cartridge inline with the hose that traps and releases moisture from you expelled breath.

If I have to go to battery power, I switch to the travel CPAP.

Looked for Schumacher jump packs and found two that might be what your friend got.

The main difference between the 2 is as follows:
SJ1332 - Has 2 A/C and 2 D/C port with 1 USB ports. Air compressor is 150psi.
SJ1289 - Has 1 A/C and 1 D/C port along with 4 USB ports. Air compressor is 100psi.

After a hurricane we on the Gulf Coast are out for days. Other than that a few minutes or hours due to thunderstorms. When I lived in rural Wisconsin it was more frequent but that was the rural electric cooperative's fault. What is your situation??
