I think eventually this will become the new Samsung "Note" series, just like what they did with the original Note.. it'll become the standard years down the road. The original Note had a 5.3" display which was enormous at the time. Now everyone is much bigger than that but it did usher in the era of phablets.

Maybe a better way to look at this is - bearing in mind that tech relentlessly drives down costs and prices might be: "The era of multi-screen mobile computing is coming."

If not worth $2K to most people (I could imagine some globe-trotting investor-types finding this viable) as costs and prices drop, this tech may well find itself in future phones at increasingly reasonable price points.

If this gains traction, and proves viable and durable in production and actual usage (note they didn't even have one to send to the demonstration - it was a video link to one in a lab, run by a tech) then this could be pretty useful.

Also note that this Galaxy Fold folds inwardly. The Chinese folding phones fold outwardly, which is much easier to achieve but harder to protect the screen. Folding inwardly and avoiding creating a crease is a huge engineering step.

I don't have the slighted interest in a 2K cell phone, or a 1K for that matter. Those that do...enjoy!

If you could buy one tomorrow for $50 would you?

Hell yes almost everybody would.

So the proper analysis is that it’s cool as hell but too expensive for most right now........

They should have had workers standing up front, out of view of the camera, to hold up "Applaud" signs at the appropriate moments. (Snicker)

The phone itself is interesting and I know PLENTY of people who will pay $85 a month over 2 years for a phone... and likely more than that.

Not me, but others will. And that numbers grow all the time. Go back 12 years when most phones were pretty much free with a contract... who would think that we’d be spending $700 on phones one day? Probably not many.

That's amazing technology. But at a premium price.

As technology catches up & price drops some. I could see more companies adopting this. At $2K it's a rich persons toy.

If companies subsidize the cost with contracts.. or allow people to pay over course of 24 month contract. It would make it in reach of the average Joe.

4700 MAH Battery in it? My Note 9 has a 4000 MAH and I can get around 14 hours of use. 10 heavy. It's also less than half the size of this Fold. Battery life is going to be shit on this device.

That said, if I had unlimited disposable funds, I'd own one. It's great seeing it's a possibility.

At $2k/pop I would not want to be an early adopter and find out.

Hate to sound like a broken record (re: Android vs. Apple), but that's one of the reasons I switched to Apple devices. Even if the batteries in Android devices would hold up longer, or were replaceable, or could be replaced economically: The updates don't.

You can get the batteries replaced on Apple mobile devices for years (I just got the one in my iPhone 6S replaced in late November), and they're committed to updates for something like 3-5 hardware versions? My wife and I have iPhone 6S'. That's three hardware revs back from the current models. Just got another update w/in the last week.

My point isn't to bash Android or Samsung. Or to promote Apple. My point is it seems Wrong to me to spend that much money on something that's got a 2-3 year built-in obsolescence. People do it. It's their money, so more power to 'em. But it does not make sense to me.

I'm glad you qualified that with "almost" Smile I would not--but for reasons that are outside the scope of this thread.

You make an excellent point. I have been replacing batteries on my co-workers iPhone's for several years. Last one was a 5 and I got it on Amazon for 15 bucks and it had all the tools. Same with home buttons (8 and below) and charging ports. The smartest thing Apple ever did was offer wireless charging to the 8 and up. I used my port on my X maybe once a week at most. That was for weekly back ups to my Mac. Same with my Note 9, I use wireless charging only.

I'm one of those guys who rarely keeps a phone longer than 1.5-2 years though, so I typically don't have any battery issues. I'm hard on phones internally. I use my phone more like a computer though.

My friend's bother still uses his digital Startac. He bought a smartphone and it thoroughly baffles him.

I can relate to that. I saw this mobile phone advertised in AARP magazine. It had huge numbers and very limited function. I thought, 'yeah, that's what I need'. I hate my iphone and have no idea, nor do i care, what 98% of the capabilities are about.

Well, no I wouldn't. The current 'Flip' phone in folded form is too thick and heavy for my liking and I really have no use for the expanded screen. When I want/need a bigger screen, there's always my Samsung Galaxy Tablet, or my Lenovo Thinkpad laptop, or my Dell XPS desktop available.

Never be an early adopter of tech, because it will either die on the vine or drop in price.

Look at plasma TVs. They came out and were $3K plus. Now they are well south of $1K, even much much lower.
