Wants vs needs.
I have a 6+ now and it does everything I want. Most photos and stuff are now stored in the Icloud for 99 cents a month so you don't need the larger storage capability you once had to have.

It hasn't. It actually (just like the Pixel 4a) isn't even available for purchase yet. When it is you'll have to grab the European/International version off the OnePlus website (how I got my current OnePlus 3, which I still like) as the first phase of its sale will only be to the Indian and European market. They claim a 'new' version of the Nord will be released in the US this Fall with OnePlus' new flagships.

Personally, I feel the SE (2020), which is about the same size as my old 6S, is about the perfect size. Small enough to fit comfortably in a front pocket, with room to spare, and just large enough for most stuff to be mostly readable in most light most of the time.
For you guys wanting a smallish phone, check out the specs on the Pixel 4a (there will be no 4a XL, at least for now). IMO, it has a nicer sized screen than the SE (its OLED with super high pixel density) yet the overall size of the phone is quite manageable. It actually has a bigger screen than my OnePlus 3 does, yet the body of the phone is quite a bit smaller. I'm looking forward to finding one to play with to see how I like the form factor in my hand.

Laugh if you want to but still carry a old school flip phone. I am so cheap I drink a cup of used motor oil every morning to keep from squeaking. Personally can"t see spending that much money for what I would use it for. And the only reason for the flip phone is that in 2006 wife said no phone/no motorcycle. But to each their own. .......................... drill sgt.

Just an FYI to those of you who don't have the opportunity to pick up and play with a bunch of phones, the game is moving from flagship brute force power, to phones like the Pixel 4a and OnePlus Nord that are designed completely around the user experience and value. Apple has generally always been great at maximizing how their software and hardware play together to create a very smooth, user friendly, environment. Manufacturers using Android have not always been great at that integration. I recently played with an brand new LG Velvet ($600) phone, and though the specs on paper looked good, it was obvious LG had not spent much time integrating Android with their hardware. Incredibly unimpressive user experience. Though Samsung has moade strides in minimizing their bloat and weight of their 'skins', their current 1Ui is still far too annoying for me to ever own another Samsung phone.

And those here claiming they buy flagship $1k+ phones for their better pic and video quality, the gap between the output from those phones and these $400 phones is shrinking rapidly. I would argue that well composed pics from the Pixel 4a and a new Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra or Note 20 will be so close that most people won't be able to tell the difference. That's really the point of this thread. A few years ago, the chasm of capabilities between less expensive and very expensive phones was huge. Today, that chasm has shrunk to a point where people can get 'almost' flagship performance in day to day use with a phone costing less than half as much. I like this idea as it opens the opportunity for me to move back to upgrading my phone every year or two again if I'm only shelling out <$400 as opposed to buying a $800-$900+ phone and holding onto it for several years.

Whatever works for ya. Smile However, I got my 83 year old father onto a smart phone and he's having a blast with it. To date he can now take pics and videos, handle text, and email, and excluding his continuous flow of phone calls asking questions, he's done excellent with it. He can't get over how great it is to take a quick pic of something before he takes it apart for repairs, so he can reference that to put it back together. No more trial and error until ya get it right. Smile

I love cheap phones. I have a 6 I believe. Got it new for 120 bucks. Wife and one daughter got the expensive ones. I could care less. Same for photos. Although I will admit that the wife phone, X max I think, takes amazing pictures especially close ups.

I always buy the flagship iPhone. I have a 11 Pro max and will be getting the 12. The way I see it I use my phone more than any other thing in my life. I constantly use it at work. My cars use Apple CarPlay exclusively. I’m always taking pics and watching videos on YouTube etc... for that I want the best screen. For me it’s worth the price. With that said the SE2 looks like a winner if you want a lower priced phone that can be a decent jack of all trades.

I think my original iPhone was $300. My friend was selling them to Europeans for $600 as they were. Not available there. AT&T was the only carrier then, too.

Please ballpark me the difference between the S4 (no kidding) I need to replace due to 5G, and the aforementioned pixel for $400. Is it that much difference again between the pixel and the S20+?

I get that yhe pixel isn't 5G either, but will it be supported somehow after my S4 isn't?

Thanks

First off, the Pixel 4a would be a huge leap forward from your S4. The Pixel would also include 3 years of Android updates whereas your S4 stopped getting updates some time back. The camera on the Pixel is monumentally better than the S4 camera module. Alternatively, the S20+ is quite a bit better phone than the Pixel 4a. It should be given its ~$700 more expensive. I would suggest that if you can get through your day without issues with an S4, the Pixel 4a will do everything you need and then some for $350. The S20+ would obviously also do everything you want/need, but would be mega overkill. Given 5G will be coming in a year or two, buying the less expensive Pixel now and upgrading your phone again in a couple years when 5G is readily available might be a good approach.

I wouldn't use 5G at this point in time as a determining factor on a phone purchase. 5G is rolling out slowly and is likely not to be readily available to most of us until 2022.
