Lost my Golden Girl this weekend

ChicagoSigManLost my Golden Girl this weekend
Cassidy was my once-in-a-lifetime dog.
She started as a service dog cadet at my non-profit organization, where I was her trainer/handler. She and I developed an incredibly strong bond. I've had a lot of dogs as pets and worked with a lot of service dogs, and I knew this was something special. I brought another puppy into the program to replace her and took her to be my forever buddy. We had a great many good times together. She traveled with me frequently, enjoyed golf cart rides around town, swims in the pool and lots of ball playing at the park. She liked my wife, but she was definitely a daddy's girl.
Everything seemed fine Saturday morning. A day like any other. No clue anything was wrong. She was her happy, active normal self. I was gone in the afternoon, but when I came home to feed her she wouldn't eat and couldn't get up to walk around. I took her to the ER immediately. They did an ultrasound, which revealed tumors on her heart, lungs, and spleen that had ruptured causing significant internal bleeding. It was too late to do anything for her, so we made the decision to let her go before she crashed. I definitely wasn't expecting to come home alone that night.
I am grateful for the memories I have of her and the things we did and glad that she lived a happy, healthy life up until her final hours. It's always too soon, but I am glad she didn't have to endure a prolonged illness or any pain. She celebrated her 10th birthday in April.
RIP Cassidy. I'll meet up with you again some day.

BrowndrakeI'm sorry you lost her....I more or less told myself after my last one that she was going to be it. She was my "heart dog"...That one special dog that you have that unique, once in a lifetime relationship with. The loss hurt too much and I didn't want to go through it again.
Fast forward about 7 years and my girlfriend came along with her Golden. They sure are special. I'm already dreading the day...but in the meantime I'm going to enjoy that dog as much as I can. It just stinks they aren't around longer.
I'm glad you got to have such a wonderful companion and she was healthy and happy up until the very end.
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love.
