I was a CT - Initially Communications Technician, later more accurately called a Cryptologic Technician. CT at the time contained 6 sub-ratings: TAMORI for Technical, Administrative, Maintenance, Operations, Collection (Ditty-chaser) and Interpretive (Linguist, like Otto).
I was M-branch aka a "Matman". Initial NEC was Crypto Repair for the KWR-37 and KG-14 both long since retired. Also gained OJT quals on Model 28 TTY, also a long-retired antique. Last technical school was for Outboard, a ship-based Signal Acquisition and Direction Finding system. I suspect that's also gone by the boards as it was developed in the late 70's.

Many of the posts in this thread would be interesting if they included the armed forces branch and an explanation of what something like “XYZ” referred to.
Mine, U.S. Army: 97D: military intelligence coordinator (E3 - E5) 97B: counterintelligence agent (E6 - E7) 351L: counterintelligence “technician” (warrant officer) 311A: Criminal Investigation Command (CID) special agent (warrant officer)

You’re absolutely right, I’ll delete my previous post and update here.
Hoping by year 10 (6 now) I’m able to start the move to Warrant.
I really need to get to Maine again and buy Mr Paul a beer or some tractor parts or something
Any time, Shipmate! No need to bring gifts.
Misawa AB Japan was probably my most interesting tour. Two things stand out.
1) We had a "back room" within the "Back Room" that was all I-branch territory. I got escorted in there from time-to-time to work on tape recorders. There was a CTI1 there (I forget his name) that earned and wore ESWS (Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist), Air Crew and Submarine Service qualification devices on his uniform. Definitely a "Been There and Done That" kind of guy.
2) On my second tour there, I got sent TAD (Temporary Additional Duty) to Pyeongtaek RK to help the crew sort out some teletype issues. IIRC, the Army was the host command but we had a small contingent of CTs there as well. I was there a week or so and got taken to the cleaners in the barracks pub playing Ship/Captain/Crew - a dice game.
