A dairy farm in Texas was rocked by a massive explosion that resulted in the deaths of thousands of cattle, reported local media outlet KFDA.

Fire crews in Dimmitt, Texas, responded to an explosion and fire that engulfed multiple building structures at South Fork Dairy on Monday evening. Reports suggest over 18,000 cattle were killed in the blaze.

Castro County Sheriff Sal Rivera said the fire resulted from an explosion that spread to the building where the cows are housed before bringing them into the milking area and holding pen.

KFDA quoted the Animal Welfare Institute, saying this is the deadliest barn fire in Texas since 2013.

Zero Hedge has a long list of fires at food processing plants. Counting this one at least 3 more fires since they quit updating the list 10 months ago.

Can't wait to see what this investigation turns up. Granted there is a lot of flammable hay & straw around that sort of livestock but unless they had a heck of a dust explosion I'm not sure off the top of my head what else other than a NG or Propane leak could have caused that.

So will someone make it easy and just tell us what exploded?

18,000 cows produce a lot of manure which is stored in pools until it can be spread as fertilizer. If they have methane digesters, they could get methane from the manure.

I am going with dust explosion. All that particulate is very flammable. It could be Just like a flour explosion from a mill. That feed and hay etc. creates a mighty fine particulate.

Just my guess, and uninformed thoughts.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to be a cow in the Texas Panhandle.

I'm only speculating that most were killed by the fires and not the actual explosion. But the report will certainly be interesting. Because of the size of that dairy operation, I was also wondering if it was under an exclusive contract to a grocery chain, i.e. HEB maybe.

something does not sound right. 18K cows in an area small enough to be killed in a single conflagration is tough to imagine.

The popular myth that cow farts contain methane is just that, a myth. There is some flammable gas in cow farts, but it is mostly Hydrogen, which dissapates so quickly as to be an unlikely hazard. Cow burps, on the other hand, do contain methane, but hardly in the quantity of popular myth.

The batteries in your EV are far more likely to be a fire hazard than your pet bovine.

I just can't imagine that number of cows killed. Not suggesting it didn't happen, rather it is my mind that just can't grasp such a number.

How do you even milk 18,000 cows? Growing up I spent a lot of time on a dairy farm. Granted, it was a family operation, but he stayed plenty busy with 50+. 18,000 is just mind boggling.
