From this article, it sounds like the kid is being punished mostly for not telling an adult. Even though he made a good decision of making the gun safe. Doing it in the classroom might have been a bad decision had it discharged. How should the school haved handled this incident? https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna233152 --Tom The right of self preservation, in turn, was understood as the right to defend oneself against attacks by lawless individuals, or, if absolutely necessary, to resist and throw off a tyrannical government.

If we take the article as being accurate and complete, (always risky) The authorities did the boy and his Mom wrong. Very wrong. IMHO, their primary motivation was to cover their own guidlined, no common sense selfish asses.

2 acceptable options in my opinion, 1) safe the gun, put it down get an adult. 2) leave it where it is, get an adult. Taking it to a classroom? Not best move. Smart decision making is not something 11 yo are known for. I believe that the "hiding the pieces" is what got him expelled.

I agree, every 11 year old knows that guns are a no no in public school, proof of his knowledge is in hiding it. Why he took it from the other kid is unknown but I would guess it was not a complete stranger to him but a friend.
