bettysnephewHelp me understand Vegan.
I am pretty sure my Aunt and Uncles cows wanted to be milked. They came to the milk house uncalled and unattended, went into their particular stall for milking and bawled like holy heck if the milking wasn't done in a timely manner. That sounds like consent even if only implied, but none the less consent. Those cows came into the barn wanting and expecting to be milked.

SIGfourmePara--hard stop on Planet Vega. Nothing to do with vegan. More to do with Borg.
Vulcans tend to follow a vegetarian diet because it is logical. Everything on the Enterprise was made by the replicator.....

We’re these cows drunk? Because if they’ve been hitting kahlua sombreros all day they can’t give consent. Just sayin.
These go to eleven.

Oh, but we do have the necessary physical means to catch prey animals (as a species at least), even without developing technological aids by leveraging our greater intelligence.
Humans initially evolved to be endurance predators engaged in persistence hunting, not necessarily relying on speed/stealth/strength like most other predators. There are only a few other examples in nature of endurance predators like us, such as certain types of wild dogs and hyenas.
Primitive humans would literally chase prey until the prey became too exhausted to continue. There are some African tribes that still engage in this style of hunting today.
Prey animals are designed to flee in short bursts of high speed for short distances, whereas humans are designed to trot after them at a moderate pace for long distances. The prey can't recover enough in the brief period before the slower human catches up to them, so each burst of energy to flee depletes their energy reserves until they eventually no longer have the ability to flee again, and the human catches and kills them.
This is why we have evolved things like an upright stance, deep stamina reserves, especially effective heat dissipation, and an efficient bipedal stride.
Early humans were the "tortoise" to all the prey "hares". Slow and steady wins the race (or the meal).

Was there really a planet Vega in the series? I had no idea. I was just joking.

SIGfourmeVega IX – A Federation colony whose inhabitants, as James Kirk discovered, were murdered by his mirror-universe counterpart.[126] It is unclear whether Vega IX also exists in our James Kirk's universe. In TNG episode "Tin Man" a Vega IX probe is mentioned which passed through the Beta Stromgren system, but it is not clear if this refers to the planet Vega IX or if this is merely the name of the probe.

amcI don't understand veganism but I can appreciate someone trying to make a conscious choice about what they put in their body and where it comes from. Unfortunately I think they are mostly misguided.
What really makes me scratch my head is meat eaters who get horrified by the thought of me hunting. It's happened to me several times at work and even church.

That’s even harder to understand than veganism.

parabellumHunting is a vital human skill which must be preserved. If your kill serves a purpose (food, clothing, herd population control) and if it's done humanely as possible, I support the practice. The hunting and killing of predatory animals is at times necessary as well.
Trophy hunting or using groundhogs or whatever for target practice- this is something I find abhorrent. In my opinion, anyone who engages in these practices needs to have their head checked. Killing indifferently or killing to feed only one's ego- these people have a screw loose as far as I'm concerned.
You want to show how brave and manly you are because you killed an elephant? Fine. Put down the rifle, strip down naked, and head out to meet Dumbo, Mister Big Shit. Let's see how you do when the playing field is level. You won't be coming back.

Nothing has made me appreciate food more than hunting. While I hate waste, it wasn't uncommon for a package of meat to go bad and have to be thrown out in my household. There was no emotional connection to it and no real work to aquire it.
To let a piece of wild game go bad in my home is unheard of. All 3 of my kids hunt or have assisted me in hunting and processing. Because they were involved in acquiring it they value it.

Cows want to be milked because it's painful to have a full sac of milk. We do them a favor by relieving them of it.

Cows wanting (needing) to be milked I believe is only a result of dairy farmers removing the calf before it would be naturally weaned. If left alone, the cow would not “want to be milked”.
Just setting facts straight, not objecting to using cows for milk production.

radiomanThe some of the Vegans near me won't consume:
honey --- bad for the bees
leather -- Vegans have special cotton shoes that wear out quickly. Some use non-petroleum soles.
fur -- obviously
silk -- bad for the worms
wool -- unfair to the sheep, even though it's just a sheering.
cosmetics or soaps that use or were tested with animals.
For April fools day, I wanted to post "Looking for a Vegan pistol holster that does not use leather or petroleum products"

But I thought better of it
(no, I'm not a vegan)

I've actually heard that comment a couple of times in my lifetime. It's hard to believe that anyone can be that stupid, but they can.
