How does one decide to get their PhD in Romantic Comedies?
I'm just wondering what the thought process is. To dedicate the time and money into something that can never be of use or benefit mankind is boggling.

Someone that got laid off from the Huffington Post opinion column (a leftist echo chamber) tweeted her sadness of losing her job and stated she has a "literal PhD in Romantic Comedies". I thought it was an exaggerating but it isn't. She actually did her dissertation on chick flicks.

For the last three years, I’ve been writing my doctoral dissertation, on romantic comedies.

Say what? Three years to write a paper on chick flicks?

How long does it take to pay off a PhD while working at Starbucks?

Not sure what's worse, someone working toward a Ph.D. in Romantic Comedy, or some institution offering said degree....

But at least now she can call herself “Doctor,” and plenty of people will be impressed by that.
That’s all the motivation some people need to go to the expense and effort.

Some people really, really, REALLY love Romantic Comedies.

I graduated from U.MD in the spring of 1977. One new "hot" class that was usually over filled was, "The psychology of Death".

It was suggested to me that I should take that course because it was virtually a guaranteed A.

Seems things have gotten worse. But am I surprised? Hell NO!

If it'll make money for the University, they'll offer a degree in pretty much anything.

Actually, I'm okay with institutions offering these esoteric degrees. And if there is someone interested, fine. Many of the arts fall into this category. I'm generally supportive of the arts.

But if there are intentions other than academic / hobby, that's where it doesn't make sense. Using these degrees as the basis for most jobs is a joke.

These idiots with PhD's in such useless subjects THEN complain when they're working at Starbucks making $8.55 an hour.

Ran into one recently with her PhD in LGBTQRS Studies. She was having difficulty re-paying her student debt and didn't know why.

The answer is often the result of growing up rich. Just because of what I do I have a lot of involvement with rich people. I was amazed at how many of their kids get b.s. degrees.

Then I thought about it and figured that if they have never had to struggle for much of anything and their future finances are already secured by the parents it kills a lot of motivation in these kids.

Did some college teaching in my career. Metalwork - ie machining, casting & welding.

Used to stay near the college during the week to cut travel time. This required supper out several nights a week.

So I’m eating a nice supper in a local Irish Pub and at a nearby table is a small family of mom, dad and a recent graduate, a daughter. So they’re talking plans and what she is going to do. I try to stay quiet, mind my own business, but finally introduce myself and get into the conversation. So after some small talk we finally get around to her degree and what she might do for work. So what did she just finish?

Masters Degree in Philosophy.

I still don’t know what you do with that...
