Government Shutdown Averted
A stopgap funding bill cleared Congress this morning shortly after a midnight deadline, averting a federal government shutdown. The measure from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R, LA-4) was approved by the Republican-led House by a vote of 366-34 Friday, while the Democratic-led Senate followed suit early Saturday morning by a vote of 85-11. President Joe Biden is expected to sign the bill today.

The short-term extension, known as a continuing resolution, funds the government at current levels through March 14 while adding $100B for disaster aid and $10B for agricultural assistance to farmers. It eliminates President-elect Donald Trump's demand to raise or suspend the debt ceiling, which Republican leaders indicate will be addressed separately in upcoming tax and border policy discussions next year.

The debt ceiling limits the total amount of money the US can borrow to meet its existing financial obligations. The US debt has risen to roughly $36T after the ceiling was suspended from June 2023; that suspension expires Jan. 1.What is life expectancy of Mike Johnson (R, LA-4) of the house?Dead Man WalkingHe's doing a good job under the circumstancesAnother Spineless Jelly Fish

egregore
This article acknowledges the compromise nature of the bill, in a "not great but not as bad as it could have been" way.
https://townhall.com/tipsheet/...ill-passing-n2649408 Compromises, by their nature, don't fully satisfy everybody, and often don't please anybody.

Republicans scored a significant victory after successfully passing a spending bill on Friday to avert a looming government shutdown with just 12 hours to spare. The new 118-page bill, which overcame partisan tensions, reflects a strategic win for GOP lawmakers after 38 Republicans voted against the Trump-backed bill on Thursday. After negotiating, lawmakers agreed to trim the funding bill to just under 600 pages after the initial draft was more than 1,300 pages and included unnecessary spending, such as a pay increase for Congress members.
It did kick the debt ceiling "can" down the road.

80% of that $10B is for food stamps. A different kind of poison.

FredwardEveryone is dogging Johnson, but I believe he used a good strategy. He knew the huge CR would not pass, and probably leaked info, like the congressional raise. It was a good excuse to blame the Dems for killing it, which they did. The smaller bill sailed thru-as the Dems would be blamed for the shutdown. After all, Biden IS still President.

nhtagmemberI don't think any dems would vote to get rid of Johnson because they have him in their pocket
but he is NOT what we need as a Speaker - he is an impediment to progress

smschulzYou can't put everything on Johnson.
He is in a tough spot trying to please everyone.
Despite not having a perfect bill, it is progress.
Moving forward it will only get better but as great as the Freedom Caucus ideas are we can't get there except incrementally as hard as it is to wait, the FC needs to be patient too and assist not obstruct, IMO.

That says a lot about the quality of education at UofH. Or, maybe it just says a lot about bitch from the ghetto. You can take a bitch out of the ghetto, but you can never take the ghetto out of the bitch.
