Need help with a slang term for corporate “creatives”

I don't know that its quite as bad. The people I know don't really have set jobs - they work at an agency, but might produce a TV ad, a print ad, a social media campaign, a brand identity for a store, and a logo. They just seem to "do stuff" related to advertising.

I know and have known hundreds of them in my career.

Very real, very normal for them, across multiple industries, generally Advertising/Design roles.

I'm amazed at both the lack of awareness of such a long enduring and common term, as well as the blatant vitriol for a wide and diverse class of workers. Its as if learning and awareness shut down for half of you in 1995.

Richard Florida didn't invent the term in ca. 2000, but certainly, he mainstreamed it for, well, regular people?

As a middle aged architect, and proud member of the creative class, I can attest that we all don't don lumber-sexual attire and sip lattes with our rescue mutt.

Bobos is a slang term. It is not derogatory and does not fit many of the Creative Class, but fits some high executives; think Steve Jobs.

I think its "beret askew", but I do love a turtleneck for pure function in a northern winter.

And bald1, respectfully, I have no idea why the term "creatives" has generated the ridicule from all but a few here. Its curious, perhaps having to do with age. But hell, I'm in my 50s, so we're talking a relatively narrow band of age.

My friends and peers use it simply to differentiate job types, i.e. sales from creatives from business or similar. None of my "creatives" (and I'd never use it that way) are professional artists. We're architects, graphic designers, even certain engineers. Its merely a job descriptor.

I do appreciate member cne32507's wiki search and reference piece here, explains it use effectively.

I have worked with and known several architects. They called themselves . . . architects. Same for graphic designers, artists, painters etc.

So why bother hijacking an adjective? That is what gets under peoples skin and garners some grief.

I have a PhD, but I am not Dr. Redstone. I do not insist people at the gun club call me Professor etc. I am just Dave. I am not a creative, nor do I tell people that I am an intellectual.

Simply put it is pretentious, elitist, snobbish, and unnecessary.

Look, I've never referred to myself as a "creative", and not certain I've ever heard anyone do so with such a lack of specificity. Its obvious that if you think thats how its used, the word isn't in your lexicon. Thats fine, I see it used casually often in spoken and written word.

Rather than responding dismissively, derisively or ridiculously (first to be eaten?), think of it as simply saying "He's in the trades".
