Army 2-Star General Walks His Final Shift At The Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier
Very cool article today on Task & Purpose about a retiring Army General who walked one final shift as a Tomb Guard at the the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He started there in 1989 as a Private and chose to walk one final shift in 2024 there as a 2-star Major General just before retirement:

An Army general’s final ‘walk’ at the Tomb of the Unknowns

Maj. Gen. William Zana, the only guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to reach the rank of general, took a final guard shift on the night he retired.

This was perhaps the most selfless, and honorable, behavior from a senior general I have seen during my military career, pre- and post- my own retirement. General, I salute you for your service and devotion to duty!

Great article, thanks for posting. I attended my stepfathers burial at Arlington this past spring. Very solemn and honorable place. Besides my children being born, visits to Arlington National and the American Cemetery in Normandy were two of my most emotional days ever for me. Really puts things in perspective imo!

Cool story, TY. I've sent this to my family vets, including a nephew who was Old Guard Capt for a short time.

One of the managers I work with was a member of the Old Guard during his service but did not apply to be a Sentinel. I can't wait to share this story with him tomorrow.

I salute you Gen. Zana......Several years ago on Veterans Day attended a program at a local elementry school and the key note speaker was a former memberof the old guard unit as well as a sentinal. He had the students listening to every word. .......... drill sgt.
