Posting here is far more practical and productive that checking in with Pythia over at Delphi (the non-software Oracle).

So - what is your recommended extra-virgin olive oil? Only used for finishing assorted things with a drizzle...

I’ve been using Laudemio (made in Tuscany) since bringing some back from a trip to Rome.

Love the flavor (peppery, grassy, herbal come to mind), but not the price.

Running low, so wanted to consider options.

Thanks in advance.

I picked up some of this EVOO from HEB during their recent Italian promotion. It's from Sicily and I like it better than the Bertolli and Kirkland I had been using.

Don't buy anything domestic as it's most likely not EVOO.

I've been using Kasandrinos Greek Olive Oil for the past few years and really like it...although it took some getting used to after having used the crappy domestic stuff for so long.

I recently ordered some from Israel that should be here pretty soon. It'll be interesting to see how different it is from the Greek stuff.

Only pure olive oil for me.

We get the organic Kirkland brand EVOO. I understand that there’s a risk that any domestic brand may not be EVOO, but usually Costco doesn’t steer you wrong on something like that. I guaranty that there are many many better ones out there, but for us the mix of price and quality is right.

There is a lot of fake and deluded olive oil on the market. I saw a list somewhere that listed a bunch of tested oils that were 100% pure. This is the one we use from that list and we really like it. California Olive Ranch.

I've seen several reports that some high-end imported EVOOs have been found to be adulterated with various oils. I buy those that have been certified by the California Olive Oil Council:

www.cooc.com

I've been using Figueroa Farms EVOO for a couple of years, but I'm going to try the Arbequina recommended by konata88 & bald1.

I can't help getting the feeling that there's a bunch of Italians and Greeks selling us 'EVOO' and laughing their asses off.

It would be kind of like us selling them vegetable oil at 3x the price and having people buy it en mass.

Olive Oil Fraud’ oils that failed to meet EVOO standards:
Bertolli
Carapelli
Colavita
Star
Filippo Berio
Mazzola
Mezzetta
Newman’s Own
Safeway
Whole Foods

Which Olive Oils Passed the EVOO Standards? These olive oils have met the extra-virgin standards; this list of brands is from the research above.

Bariani Olive Oil is Stone Crushed, Cold Pressed, Decanted, and Unfiltered California Extra Virgin Olive Oil and they are committed to producing an authentic extra virgin olive oil which is raw. Weston Price recommends this oil.

Corto Olive – can sometimes be purchased at Costco. Cobram Estate – Australia’s most awarded extra virgin olive oil

California Olive Ranch – Award winning olive oil brand. It is in a tinted glass bottle protects oil and is 100% grown and made in California.

Kirkland Organic – Amazon says: “Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil certified organic by the USDA. Made from the first cold pressing.” Comments on Amazon: of the 478 people who gave stars, 73% gave 5 stars.I have to say it is a very delicious olive oil, tasting like real olives; I’m just finishing up the bottle I bought.

Lucero (Ascolano)
McEvoy Ranch Organic
Ottavio – good olive oil but in a plastic bottle.
Omaggio
Whole Foods California 365 – 100% Californian, Unfiltered, Cold Processed,
California Olive Oil Council – Certified Extra Virgin
Olea Estates 100% extra virgin olive oil i- This olive oil is grown on a single family farm in Greece and is a great tasting olive oil.

Consumer Reports (September 2012 issue), published results of a taste test of 138 bottles of extra virgin olive oil from 23 manufacturers. The olive oil was sourced from the US, Argentina, Greece, Chile, and Italy. They found that olive oil produced in California exceeded those from Italy.

Two highest scoring olive oils (both from California) from their testing were:
McEvoy Ranch
Trader Joe’s California Estate
Ellora Extra Virgin Olive Oil is one of the best olive oils. It is 100% Pure Cretan Extra Virgin Olive Oil of which the origin and authenticity is certified by the EU standards.

While meeting the stringent requirements it maintains a focus on environmental consciousness and tradition. When you are ordering it online it comes in many sizes which can make shipping more economical.

This is the one I am getting: 2 tins of Ellora Extra Virgin Olive Oil and 2 Ellora EVOO spray bottles saves on shipping to get lots at the same time.

Here is another olive oil I recently discovered that is certified: Kasandrinos Organic Extra Virgin Greek Olive Oil – 100% certified organic, non-GMO extra virgin olive oil from Kasandrinos century-old family orchard. Mechanical cold-pressing within 48 hours locks in the delicious flavor of the olives at peak of ripeness.

And one more that is a very good oil winning medals: Partanna Extra Virgin Olive Oil is cold-pressed oil, unfiltered oil grown and packaged in Partanna, Sicily. The Asaro family has been producing it since 1916. This EVOO has been the winner of Gold Medals at the L.A. County Fair.

Actually, many/most of the Italian ones are fakes. Seems like a serious problem trying to find authentic ones out of Italy.

California Olive Ranch, made in the USA, is authentic, and is all I buy.

Several members recommended the California Olive Ranch Arbequina EVOO. I received a bottle of it about a week ago, and second their recommendations. It's the best EVOO I've ever tasted – fruity and spicy.

I just had some, drizzled over garlic ciabatta toast – delicious. I was reluctant to brush my teeth while the wonderful aftertaste lingered.

Thank you, SigForum!
