FN in MTCougar stalks man for 6 minutes during run in Utah
I hiked last year in GNP with a small bobcat following me on the trail. They use the hiking trails as it makes for easier travel.
I later encountered some southern fools who made a huge deal out of a 12 pound cat.
"He's STALKING us" ! Good Lord!
Though had it been THIS kitty , my bear spray would have been at the ready.

GarandGuyI spent a considerable amount of time playing in the Wasatch Mountains there in Utah during my college days. We never saw a cougar up close and personal. We'd see the occasional print.
One day a buddy and me were up hiking around Mount Timpanogos. It was late morning, and I just had this feeling. That feeling that we were being watched. About 10 minutes later we came across what looked like, to us, a relatively fresh mule deer kill, or what was left of it.
I had my Scandium S&W at the ready the rest of the hike. We never saw a cougar that day, but man if it wasn't watching us.
-------------
My mother in law grew up in New Mexico and she tells a story about she was walking home from work one day and she too had that feeling that something was walking with her, though she couldn't see it. She said that something spoke to her and told her not to run and don't turn around. She says what seemed an eternity and she was in her yard and inside the fence.
Next day or so her dad lost some livestock, and about a week later down the road, another boy was attacked by a cougar. Thankfully the boy survived.
Nature is scary, makes you feel for those Neanderthals!

This cat was not hunting the hiker. It was intimidating him. Notice how she was bluff charging, dog tracking and growling? These are tactics to drive a threat away. As soon as she figured he was far enough up the trail, she bugged out. If he were being hunted, she would have stayed hidden and quiet until she pounced.
Definitely looked like intimidating. She could have ended the intimidation because the millennial was far enough from her cubs or she smelled something more dangerous (e.g. bear or wolves) to her cubs than the millennial. They are a predator, but not the apex predator.

I was half-expecting something akin to a well-used movie cliche, where we see the initial attacker turn tail and scatter, not fully knowing why, and then when the camera pans 180 degrees and we see a much larger, scarier and meaner predator.

Bobcats are common in the South. Maybe they were just plain fools?

I agree, that cougar just wanted him gone. If it wanted a meal there was nothing to stop it. She could have had one pretty easily.

Bending over will make you no longer appear big and scary, which is the opposite of what you want with mountain lions.
This guy did everything right.
I never had any Mountain Lion encounters in all my hikes in Mountain Lion country, but I carried a very large knife just in case (CO had may issue CCW at the time).

YooperSigsEver try to pick up your house cat when it doesnt want to be handled?
Add 90 or so pounds to that experience and you have a Mountain Lion.

357fuzzSeveral years ago we had a Cougar up a tree in the city I work in. Across the street from an elementary school and 20 minutes before school dismissed. We called the Carp Cops and asked what we should do. They said terminate it. We did. People bitched. DNR did an autopsy on it. Younger female with an empty belly. DNR said there was one reason that pusser was there.... the buffet.

4x5My wife showed me that video after she got back from her weekly hike in those same mountains. I once again implored her to take ANYTHING along with her - any kind of handgun, because most of the time it's just her and a friend alone on the trail.
Also, I was thinking as I was watching that video, if the kitty decided to kill him, that would make for an awful video to be found by whoever found his body.
Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice - pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

Minus not carrying
I wouldn't have filmed it either...mostly because that would be the first thing thrown at it after my water bottle.

OzarkwoodsMy understanding of the video was he was running and came upon the mother and it’s kits. If you watch it you can see where he finally dropped down and picked up a rock——- which is what I was yelling for him to do, then hit he cat with it. If that isn’t enough to get your adrenaline going, nothing will.
