Hooking up my cell phone to the desktop's USB port to upload pics. This is something that has been done a thousand times w/o problems. Then, this last week, it's no longer happening. Computer "no longer recognizes this USB device". Tried different cables. No dice. Is there a simple solution? As of now, all the pics I took have to be sent to email then downloaded on the computer, a process that takes a hundred times longer. Q

Unfortunately it could be one of several things. I presume you already tried restarting the phone and the computer? Otherwise, bad connection or USB port (you already tried different cables) or device drivers that need updating or reinstalling. Type of computer/OS and phone?

assuming windows... connect the phone go to device manager and locate the phone there. right click / uninstall. disconnect the phone. reconnect the phone. This is where my signature goes.

Computer: Dell Inspiron, Windows 7. Phone: Samsung Galaxy A52 5G. Restarted all devices. Still no go.
Phone did not show up in Device Manager. My wife's phone did, however.
Went to Settings. There is no "System" or "USB settings".
Yes, and same result. I tried with my wife's phone, and computer had no problem accessing the data from it. So, it's my phone that is the culprit, and none of the others. What's the next step I can do myself? Or, will I need to take it in? Q

I know my iPhone won’t charge or transfer files when the usb port gets dirty. I spray some Deoxit in there and that helps … sometimes. I get dirty it and wet at work a lot.

Try these steps . Open the phone settings. Go to “Developer options". Enable the mode. Click on "Default USB Configuration". Select “File Transfer”. If you cant get into developer mode try this. Get access to developer options https://www.samsung.com/uk/sup...msung-galaxy-device/ I'm alright it's the rest of the world that's all screwed up!

Thanks. I did all this really hoping it was going to work, but it's still not happening. Windows still does not recognize USB device.
Mine is very clean. Even blew it just now. Not happening. Q

Android & the 'flavor' of android (samsung changes things) all have different ways of addressing settings & connection modes. I have no specific guide, but in general, you need to make sure the phone is connected in 'file transfer' mode. My LG has 3 or 4 different modes, file transfer, charge only, modem, and maybe 1 or 2 more that I've never used. It's 5+ years old and has changed behavior at least 3 times as updates have been applied. Currently, if my phone is unlocked (screen on) and I plug in USB, my computer recognizes it & allows file transfer (shows up like a USB stick or removable drive). If locked (screen off), it connects as 'charge only' (nothing in 'my computer' or device manager). When I would have to select each time I connected, I -think- modem mode also showed up in device manager, but not in the 'my computer' area, but I haven't mistakenly selected that mode in forever. If your computer makes the 'usb connected' sound, but nothing shows up in device manager, I'd suspect it's in 'charge only' mode. Samsung used to like to muck with that type of thing when they updated (haven't had a samsung in 7 or 8 years). The terminology might be different & the settings location/names are most certainly different between brands, but hopefully gets you in the ballpark.

Just to clarify, you cleaned out the computer usb port or the port on the phone? If not the phone, then try that too. More likely place for a problem than the computer port.

For shits and gigs, maybe try another computer, a laptop or something. I know they're not the same, but I've had a couple of flashdrives suddenly not work in one Windows laptop, switched to another PC and they work. Too bad it isn't 10 or 11 that has a nice phone sync app. However, I agree with oddball to try it on another computer if only temp the copy off the files.

Since I don't see it mentioned, plug another USB device into the computer if it is not recognized you know it is the port. Since it is Windows 7 google windows USB troubleshooter. If it is a Windows problem that should give you a method to fix it. Only download the official MS version, there are some other stuff out there that is sketchy.

If the USB port is your main suspect, try different ports. When this is the case, the port might not have enough power from the PSU. Happens and it does occasionally and progressively. Anotber thing to try is to go to Device Manager and remove the USB ports altogether. They will be detected again at reboot. The options listed above are excellent, just giving you a more radical one. aNormally the phone and cable are the prime suspects. 0-0 "OP is a troll" - Flashlightboy, 12/18/20
