YooperSigsOften, we debate the AR vs. shotgun for home defensive use. Both have their pluses and minuses, but for close range effectiveness, I opt for the shotgun.

He was thinking, "Ew, that will be a closed casket."

bigdealIt would be especially interesting to know some details about the officer, like how many years on the force, if he belongs to any other units, and what training he's had. His whole approach to this situation was very impressive. I'd venture a guess that he accomplished what maybe 70-75%+ of our local sheriff's and police department personnel could not.
Kinda dispels once again the argument about a shotgun having a huge spread right out of the barrel. On a side note, that woman is going to be picking wadding out of her hair for hours.

AugenYep, the confidence in his training to engage a headshot at that distance is fantastic. Another reason to pattern your shotgun a few known distances.
He made that decision quickly that the hostage was going home quickly that night.

He killed her mother and father, and beat her boyfriend. That is her ez boyfriend. She said "he shot my dad" because he killed her parents. I am assuming she didn't know he killed both of them at that point in time.'
Is that true?
If so, he didn't die soon enough.

HayesGreenerI was trained in a police academy more than 45 years ago that the shotgun was my primary weapon, the handgun is for when you didn't have time to get the shotgun. This is why-at close range it is a fight stopper and I can testify to that on a personal level. Twice in my career I was within 10 feet of suspects shot in the "X" with 12 ga 00 buck, and it was over. In both cases the shot pattern was less than 4 inches. Interestingly in both cases I saw the suspects continued running their mouths on the way to the ground after being shot. The officer in the video did an outstanding job, and his assertiveness and the head shot reflects modern-day active shooter training. Another one for the good guys.
The shotgun remains my primary home defense gun.

gruntjimMy understanding is the charge used was 8 pellet Flight Control OO.
You simply don't get more effective with a small arm.

RichardCI have a question about LE issued, duty-use shotguns:
Are they
always fixed choke barrels, so that there is no question/variation in the close encounter shot patterns
at 10, 20, thirty feet?

kidcopFederal LE 132 Flite Control really extends the range of buck and makes shots like this eminently doable.
I heard a coroner refer to this kind of shotgun wound as a "rathole" wound.
I've got my share of ARs but still count on a 12 gauge for my home.

Modern ones? Virtually always fixed choke, improved cylinder.
Kidcop is spot-on about FC ammo. We start our quals with a "patterning" check. On my issued 870P (14") at 10 yards all of the 00 pellets in the pattern can be easily covered by my fist.

RogueJSKI've never seen a law enforcement shotgun with an interchangeable choke.
In fact, I've never seen a factory barrel shorter than 21 inches with interchangeable chokes, either law enforcement or commercial.

cslingerI’ve always wondered if one of the advantages of a shotgun at close range vs a rifle has to do with the body having to deal with multiple wound tracks immediately vs 1 projectile from a rifle. Even when you have a shotgun spread that is silver dollar or less sized you still have multiple projectiles doing their own thing in the body.
It just seems 12 gauge at close range SEEMS to be superior in stopping a fight vs a rifle.
Now that said a carbine is FAR more versatile and easier to handle, especially the older I get..... and I’m not old.
Now when you schwacked upside then head at 5 feet probably doesn’t matter much.

220-9erNot sure what the now ex-girlfriend was doing with the other cop.
Looks like one of them had their arm fully straight out to the other for some reason.
Sounds like the perp had already killed a few other ex's and intended to kill her but his gun failed to fire.
