San Diego's "Finest" found me and brought me home.

As to the question of doing it all over again, when I retired, I would have said yes. Now, the way things have changed, I seriously doubt it.

Thank you. After my promotion last month, I worked Christmas Eve/Christmas Night & New Years Eve/New Years Night, and most of the nights before, between, and since. Missed most of my family celebrations and was a zombie for the ones I made it to. Next Thursday will mark working 28 out of 24 days, two of them being double shifts that had me up 30+ hours, and none of the days off in a row.

I'm in the busiest division in my city. Domestics, stabbed people, shot people, dead people, brains strewed down the road for 1,000 feet people...it's been a crazy stretch. NYE was absolutely insane. If ever I had been aware of the "thin blue line", that night was it. I've seen more brain matter in the last week than most people probably see in a lifetime.

Biggest surprise--one of my officer's 8 year old daughters gave me a Christmas card. They told their kid they had a new boss and the kid asked if she could send a card. I've got an 8 year old myself. Caught me off guard and got a tear out of me. I don't think my kids have any idea what I do on a normal shift. My son is 11 and likes to help me get ready, but they have no idea what we deal with, no clue of the close calls--and I never want them to. And here was this officer's daughter wishing me a merry Christmas and thanking me for watching out for her parent.

Spent my few days that would have been days off over the last couple of weeks teaching the recruits at the academy. Looking at them, I don't know if I could start from zero again. Not with society the way it is today. I just hope I imparted some sliver of wisdom that helps them one day. My time with each recruit class is probably one of my most favorite parts of my job because of the potential to positively influence even just a handful.

I'll have four days off starting the 16th. I might get drunk.

I take every opportunity to shake hands and thank police officers for their service. Surprises some of them, but they seem to appreciate the gesture.

Powerful and moving indeed.

My 93 yo stepdad is a retired LEO and WWII vet. I've seen him shed tears when events have been portrayed or discussed about his time as a cop or as a young kid in WWII. Most recently about the USS Indianapolis. As an aside he served as a PO2 diesel mechanic on LST 1025.
