Last Mortgage Payment Coming Up :)
Is it OK to put a bunch of glitter in the envelope along with the check?

Congrats. Instead of glitter, put in those flashy little words that they sell. Much easier to clean up than glitter.

Not minority enough!

That's an awesome achievement! Don't put glitter in the envelope though, that would seem like bragging a little too much. Just draw a happy face on the check and be done with it.

Mike gets it.

Of course we have met, so he might understand my twisted sense of humor.

I normally pay online with EFT, but for the final payment, I am tossing a coin: paper check in the mail? With glitter?

Or maybe march into a local branch and pay, maybe accompanied by a barbershop quartet or drum and bugle corps, or old-timey Dixieland ensemble, or drill team. Or all of the above.

PossibleZombie's suggestion happy face drawn on the check is good. I'll do that with, or without, the glitter.

It was about 13 years ago that Washington Mutual was offering a good rate with no closing costs, so I bought down the remaining 18 or 19 years of the original 30 year mortgage, rolled it into a 15 year, paid a bit extra on the principle each month and cut a couple years off it.

Washington Mutual, which always impressed me as a bunch of kids dressing up like grown-ups and playing banker, folded and was gobbled up by Chase, so I have been making payments to user-unfriendly Chase for several years.

At first I used to drop my payments off at a branch that was on my way to work. The monthly payment amount was fairly small, but the people at the branch aggravated me with their constant errors, such as failure to apply the extra payment to the principle (principal? I can never remember which is correct), so I have not set foot in a Chase branch, nor used the drive-through, for many years.

In fact, the last time I was in a branch, I was leaving and the teller evidently called after me to ask a question. I say "evidently" because I am hearing impaired; I heard a sound but I did not recognize that she was calling my name, so I did not pay any attention and kept walking toward the door.

Next thing I knew somebody behind me was grabbing me. I spun around, quickly pushed the person away with my left hand, dropped the cane from my right hand, and reached for my holster. OOPS! It was the teller. I realized who it was and did not draw, but she saw what my right hand was about to do and she kind of freaked out. I picked up my cane, told her NEVER to grab anybody from behind, left, never went back to that (or any other) Chase branch. Made all subsequent payments electronically.

I'm thinking you'll need some mechanical method of broadcasting the glitter.....maybe use the old rattle snake eggs in an envelope trick. Big Grin

You seem to think your check will be handled by one or more humans. I doubt it. Machines do all that stuff now. Machine scans the check, handles the deposit. No more physically sending the check to the bank to clear.

Washington Mutual was the worst of a pathetic lot. It completely lost control of its massive loan servicing portfolio. Disaster. Chaos and anarchy, misery and despair. Chase has been very little better.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Even though I swore to never again set foot in a Chase branch (much like Bank of America), I might break that solemn sacred vow to go in and hand over the check in person.

Or maybe I can get PHPaul to do it for me.

Congrats. As a mortgage lender it makes me happy when I get paid off. Means you returned all my money to me. The bank I work for retains all servicing so even if we sell the paper I deal with clients on servicing issues. We also don’t do coupons we pretty much require auto debit from an account at our bank.

You may want to insure the final payment includes enough for them to reconvey the deed at your county recorders office.
