We just got the Frontier to pass emissions today. The new manifold cats have been in for a couple days now. It had to complete the cycle before he could take it to get the emissions test done. I was over there yesterday with my new DeWalt electric ratchet and I can tell you , I don't know how I have lived without one. It made easy work with the manifolds on the Frontier. ____________________________ Eeewwww, don't touch it! Here, poke at it with this stick.

I consider having to remove the engine to work on it for something a blessing anymore after spending over a decade doing rear geartrain failure work on Volvos in chassis. I was kinda bummed I was doing an inframe overhaul on my current job, Cummins X15. Not just new pistons and liners, liner height dropped enough to blow a gasket so I had to cut the counterbores too for a shim to bring them back up. Much better to do that standing on the ground rather than one foot on the bumper and the other on a brake can. PACCAR 2017 generation MX-13's are cam eaters. Rear geartrain so the back of the engine has to be stripped. Our shop pulls the powertrain to do that job, other shops do it in chassis, which would be a big fat nope from me.

I admire people who have the knowledge and skill to do repairs like this. Aside from saving money and knowing the job is done right, you can safely say yo can travel long distances or cross country with basic tools and repair kits. I followed a guy in youtube where he drive his old Ford diesel truck with a home made small house on the bed (which he built himself). On his way to Alaska, his engine pulley broke. He anticipated something like this may happen and was prepared. He have a brand new spare pulley in his repair kit. Crawled under the truck and fixed the problem on the Side of the road. Looking forward to updates and more pictures. _______________________ P228 - West German

Hope you have better luck then I did on my Grandsons ranger. 98 2.5L. It started running really bad and… Blown head gasket, two cracked pistons, (between the ring groves). Have most parts for an overhaul here… But then the little 4 cyl had ~300,000 miles on it so… Pulled the engine with fork lift arms on the loader my JD 1025R. ![]() Endeavor to persevere.

Yes, its big job for a timing chain on those 4.0. I had to repair an Explorer that the chain guides went bad. I still have cam tool kit for those 4.0. The idea of putting a chain on back of the engine, no words. Seems the designers could have thought of a better idea. Ì just changed a thermostat on a '15 camaro. The thermostat is on the back of the engine. Go figure. Good luck. .

That engine is one of Ford's worst. I assume you have the cam timing tools. There are no timing marks, nor are the sprockets keyed. Also, one of the sprocket bolts is left-hand thread.

Yikes. Anything else that can be preemptively replaced while it's out and there's free space to work under the hood? ________________________________________ -- Fear is the mind-killer. Congrats on getting it out and not mentioning any swear words. Did the chains on a Dodge truck once it hit 200,000 miles. Didn't take long to come to the conclusion it would be easier to remove the front end of the truck than take the engine out. Now about that stuff going on at Audi...

Makes a ford 300 6 cylinder look like child’s play, don’t it? Dad had a F150, bronco & my bros F150 all had the same engine and dad had a 300 on a hoist standing by. Guess those days are gone now.
