Too old to run, too mean to quit! |
Prayers for all the family and co-workers of the heroic police officers. Hopefully those wounded will have a full recovery and return to duty. These stories make me very glad that my brother retired from law enforcement several years ago. RIP Deputy Flick. So sad. It really is out of character for CO to have this level of violence and crime, but the last year or two seems to have got much worse. We have had near weekly property crimes in my area. In fact, a few months back an off-duty officer killed someone breaking and entering his home about 4-5 blocks away right at the time my kids walk home from school. I feel like there's a lot of reasons but the huge population surge of the last 10-15 years is really catching up. CO just seems overly populated and stressed. Everything is busy and things that used to be accessible are hard to do. Likewise, the PD only has time for the big issues. Basically if you aren't shot or something significant happens, don't look for the police. We've had at least 3 gun shop break-ins in the last year in Littleton alone. In my nearly 15 years back here I had not heard of a single instance in my town prior to this run. Granted there could have been several but it sure seems like it's more common. And the police won't even give chase now when guns are involved. If you speed away at 3am the police are handcuffed and cannot pursue (just happened!). Very frustrating as a citizen who respects the rule of law and the important role of our police force. I hate to say it, but I may be giving up on CO. My house is worth over twice what I paid but I feel the value of my community is diminished. We are seriously looking at San Antonio and Tampa as a new home for a family starting this Spring. We may still stay in CO and go more rural, but if the right opportunities present themselves, the wife and I are both on board to move on. I guess you could read that as...I don't think it's getting better anytime soon. This is sad as recently as a few years ago I never thought of moving. | |||

Tried by fire |
This one hits close to home. Det. Flick's mother is a colleague of mine. They are people of great faith and have a tremendous support base here, but a blow like this can't be measured. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office will be posting a link to the GoFundMe page to help the family.
