Our second floor is always much hotter than the first. We had a quote for a Mitsubshi 3 room system and the price was insane, somewhere around 25k.

We ended up doing just our master with a single Bryant unit for 3k installed. This was about 4 years ago. It was money well spent and it run flawlessly.

I would not get caught up on having the Mitsubshi name as it will cost you. The way I figured we could replace the system twice before the cost of a Mitsubshi.

Mitsubishi offers the same Hyper Heat system for a conventional ducted application. The quote I got in 2024 was about $12,000 to replace my 21 year old Trane heat pump but the damn thing is still working. When it does quit that's what I plan to replace it with. Unfortunately it's probably increased $4,000 in the last two years.

I'll wait on a quote from a well-respected semi-local installer, but my budget is $5000 max so either I go with a lesser name, or I go without.

Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

I’m in a similar craft, only one ‘zone’, hot upstairs. I really only want to cool one room upstairs.

A relative recently got a stand-alone, portable A/C unit, $300 or so, maybe $400, Amazon I think. For me I’m talking periodically over 3 months or so, cooling only. She mildly raves about it, for the price.

It does vent to a window, but much less of a deal than a traditional window unit, adjustable to window size. It’s a tower that sits on the floor.

I’m still doing research, the son comes home early Aug, my target date.

This model Durastar brand mini split is what I bought 3 years ago. Cost was $3500 installed after good buddy deal. Took a load off my overworked central a/c and my electric bill went down. House stays cool/cold and heat works fine as a supplement.
