Talk to me about mini-split AC
I use a window unit in the bedroom and for that space it's adequate.

Mrs. PHPaul's bedroom is an oven and a window unit is a no-go due to window size.

Thinking about getting a quote on a 2 or 3 zone mini-split install, 1 bedroom, living room and possibly den. No intention or need of using the heat side, not practical/economical with our Winters. Most likely get used July/August for the most part.




Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

I would definitely do it if you can afford and have someone reputable to do it. You deserve it. I would love one but our house is a bit weird as to where I could put it. Do it!

That's where my head is. Depending on the quote, I can do it for cash.

Daughter put one in her house, loves it and both she and the Innerwebz recommend the same installer. I have a request in to them for a quote.

We had a mini split put in when we finished out our patio, Friedrich I believe is the brand. So far so good, about three years old

Get more than one quote, twice now we have had quotes to run 220v to a hot tub and this mini split. Thousands apart

We put in an ultra high efficiency Mitsubishi unit about 7 years ago to address an additional bonus room space and another room at the end of the standard run that was always a little off in temperature. They work incredibly well, especially for cooling. For heat in the winter they’re a little costly compared to our natural gas main heating system, but way better than traditional electric heat. When it gets to below about minus 3 or 4 the heat really doesn’t work super well, even thought they’re rated for like minus 20, but that’s usually less than 10-14 days or so per year. I think we paid about $9000 installed 7 years ago. We got top rated Mitsubishis with 12 year warranties so I’m sure you could get less expensive equipment but I don’t skimp on heating and cooling and bought the best rated systems out there with the best warranty (which we’ve never had to use by the way). They definitely seem to be the “easy” button for older home retrofits, and I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to use them for AC. I’m sure they cost significantly less to run than window units as well.

Good, just do it. I have told the story about my elderly folks having a central furnace system with out AC. For years I told them to add it. That it would make summers so much nicer for them. Finally I just did it for them. They loved it. Just do it. You won't regret it. But you will kick yourself for not doing it sooner Big Grin

One of the best investments I ever made in my home.

Added AC to my sunroom and the AC/heat unit for my two car garage.

The only advice beyond doing it I would give is to make sure the units are somehow surge protected. We got hit with a tornado a while back and an electrical surge fried both of the main boards. Luckily, covered by insurance.

Imagine you could, it would just be a function of which cost to operate provides the best heating source.

If I was in a home without efficient AC I'd add a unit or two, these can get up to 22 seer they are highly efficient compared to window shakers.

PHP should consider having one of the units for his room as well in the quote and get rid of the window unit. Heat and Cool in the room might help cut the winter heat oil bills too....

High Seer units are super efficient...

My mini-split system installed two years ago heats down to 5 degrees.
The A/C works great and is very efficient. Saves me about 30% compared to conventional A/C.
I have three heads and cover the whole house.

My friend who owns the villa in ST Marteen that we stay at put in and replaced a couple when he bought the place. I think there are 6 or 7 individual units between the main house and the stand alone bedrooms. They work great and give you great flexibility.

I like to read FB posts on the HVAC groups. Those guys hate the mini splits. Mainly it is because it takes business from them. I think people are tired of the high cost of HVAC and mini splits are a way to alleviate that. Many of the guys on the HVAC groups say they refuse to work on the mini splits.

I see it as a way to put a dent in high HVAC costs, I just paid 12k to replace my a/c, heater and duct work. This is the second time I have done it in 28 years of owning this house. If I had min i splits, I could do it all myself. My total for HVAC replacement is at 20k in 28 years and that does not include a few repairs along the way.

These are popular in Europe and I hope they continue to gain a foothold here.

I have two(2) mini-split units that I have owned for many years. I LOVE THEM!! They get the job done and save me $$ doing it. Just do it.

I live in Cozumel Mexico. Minisplits are the only game in town. Ours are cool only, cause Mexico. They are very efficient at cooling a room. We have 1.5 ton units in the main room/kitchen and master. A 1 ton in the guest bedroom. You have to clean the filters once a month, and have the unit serviced/deep cleaned very 4 to 6 months. In Mexico that is cheap. Our top of the line units cost $500 each and $100 to install. In Tennessee we were quoted $4000.

I replaced a 25 year old central unit with 2 minisplits. I saw 30% reduction in the electric bill during a very hot summer.
I'm sold on them. Efficient and quiet!

I rent and have had both Mitsubishi and Fujitsu units. I think the Mitsubishi was the better unit but I think it was a professional install vs the Fujitsu was my landlord "knowing a guy" so that may be a factor. They will both heat in the bitter cold- We're in the same neck of the woods and they both made heat when it was approaching -30F outside but it does run full tilt to do so. I have a propane backup heater I run on those days.

They work great in New England - You can keep the bedrooms at your ideal temp without running the whole house ac/heat. They are most efficient down to around 40 - below that they work into the negatives but not as efficiently. I have Fujitsu and Daiken - both are good - It is harder to find Fujitsu authorized service companies.

We installed Mitsubishi Mini splits years ago.

I installed them for the A/C.

I was surprised that I use them as much as I do in the winter. They are more efficient than my gas boiler until it gets really cold.

I installed 7 heads with two compressors one on each side of the houses.

I had to install foam insulation at the same time to pass inspection. It was a gut rehab.

It hit 100 degrees yesterday and I only have 4 heads running keeping the house cool.

I have not needed to turn on the first floor heads as the cool air is sinking down from the upper floors.

If I was doing it again, I would get the Mitsubishi mini splits with hyper heat/H2i

Newer technology that will go down to 5 degrees F.

Not available when I bought my mini splits and use the gas mostly for hot water.
