I cannot remember the skies ever being that clear.

Taken by slot pilot U.S Navy Lt. Cmdr. James Cox, the video shows his jet in formation with others as they soared over the city. The video was prepared by Mass Communication Spc. 2nd Class Cody Hendrix.

Wednesday’s display was part of the Blue Angels initiative “America Strong,” where the group flies over cities across the country to honor first responders and essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Indianapolis and Detroit also received flyovers Wednesday.

A photographer also captured photos of the Blue Angels from the sky during Chicago’s flyover. The photos were shared on the official Blue Angels Facebook page.

I'll see your Blue Angels...

...and I'll raise you a Blue Angels + T-birds flight over New York City. Big Grin

I like this video because, while I have seen both the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds several times, this is the first demo I've seen them fly together in , let alone in an integrated formation. Shit Hot!

I was under the impression they'd be flying together for all the cities. I guess it was only New York?

California kinda got screwed on the demo schedule. F-15s on the 13th, a KC-135 and C-17 on the 14th, and T-38s on the 15th.

Not just CA, but I believe most states got abbreviated or disjointed flights. We got 2 C130s followed several hours later by a solo F-16, both late and therefore most people weren't prepared to see the flights...but, in all fairness, we got a T-bird overflight several weeks earlier for the AFA graduation followed by a state-wide pass by the T-birds. I happily committed a little civil disobedience, broke Q, and met with family to watch the demo.

I just spoke with a flying buddy and he told me they had a nice T-bird over-flight in Northern Virginia, which I'm sure was timed as part of the pass over D.C. and The Mall.

I think New York City, which took the brunt of the virus' impact and response, got the max effort "Full Monty" pass.

Unrelated, but the name on the canopy in the first Thunderbird in the 2nd video above: TSgt John King, is the brother of one of my wife's really good friends.

Got a chance to get some up close interaction when they were herein Houston last year.

Those 360 cockpit cam shots are amazing! Does anyone know anything about the camera system? It moves around very smoothly, I can't tell where it's mounted or who controls it.

After a quick search I concluded it's a 360 fly system, perhaps a member can explain more.

We got F-15's from the Oregon ANG.

You didn't specify which "he"... but, if you are referring to the F-16/ F-18 pilots the engine throttle(s) is typically controlled with the left hand, although on some other aircraft it is controlled with the right hand.

Agreed. Having flown airshows and airplanes with large cameras banging around in the cockpit and having to twist into back-wrenching yoga poses to get a formation shot, or having to fabricate some crazy contraption to mount a camera to an aircraft, I'm almost as tickled by these new 360° cameras and the images they produce as I am with the kick ass flying.

Good eyes! I pointed that out to a couple people when I first watched the video a couple weeks ago.

They didn't trade paint but I'll just bet it elevated a couple heart beats a few ticks...

...but one of the things I like about these videos is they really capture what formation flight is like and when you are going that fast and flying that tight you need to be ready to react to chop or changes in position...no time to start "sight-seeing" or slacking off.

When I flew formation we weren't going anywhere near as fast and probably kept 35-40' separation, and, at times, it still got exciting.

Blue Angels and Thunderbirds = Shit Hot flying.

This is a good one...the pilot sounds about as casual as a tour guide pointing out some novelty landmark on the left side of bus....except he's doing a few hundred knots and inverted. Cool

Last week the Snowbirds were Flying around Nova Scotia doing their same thing in a 9 ship formation. There is a cockpit POV Video of several of the flights.

Not bad

In Richmond, we felt like the red-headed stepchildren. We got one F-22 Raptor and two WW-II P-51 Mustangs. Try to picture them doing maneuvers together.

Well you shouldn't feel like a red-headed stepchild...that would be an awesome display. The very first civilian airshow performance of the F-22 Raptor included both a kick-ass solo performance as well as a Heritage Flight which included both the F-22 and a P-51 in the formation (although darned if I can recall the third aircraft in the flight...maybe an F-15) and while the flight may not have been at max. performance it was impressive nonetheless.

In fact, I'd like to see this new 360 camera tech put on a Heritage Flight.
