Sotomayor’s staff has often prodded public institutions that have hosted the justice to buy her memoir or children’s books, works that have earned her at least $3.7 million since she joined the court in 2009. Details of those events, largely out of public view, were obtained by The Associated Press through more than 100 open records requests to public institutions...

In her case, the documents reveal repeated examples of taxpayer-funded court staff performing tasks for the justice’s book ventures...

In 2019, as Sotomayor traveled the country to promote her new children’s book, “Just Ask!,” library and community college officials in Portland, Oregon, jumped at the chance to host an event.

They put in long hours and accommodated the shifting requests of Sotomayor’s court staff. Then, as the public cost of hosting the event soared almost tenfold, a Sotomayor aide emailed with a different, urgent concern: She said the organizers did not buy enough copies of the justice’s book, which attendees had to purchase or have on hand in order to meet Sotomayor after her talk.

“For an event with 1,000 people and they have to have a copy of Just Ask to get into the line, 250 books is definitely not enough,” the aide, Anh Le, wrote staffers at the Multnomah County Library. “Families purchase multiples and people will be upset if they are unable to get in line because the book required is sold out.”

It was not an isolated push. As Sotomayor prepared for commencement weekend at the University of California, Davis law school, her staff pitched officials there on buying copies of signed books in connection with the event. Before a visit to the University of Wisconsin, the staff suggested a book signing.

At Clemson University in South Carolina, school officials offered to buy 60 signed copies before a 2017 appearance; Sotomayor’s staff noted that most schools order around 400. Michigan State University asked Sotomayor to come to campus and in 2018 spent more than $100,000 on copies of her memoir, “My Beloved World,” to distribute to incoming first-year students. The books were shipped to the Supreme Court, where copies were taken to her chambers by court workers and signed by her before being sent to the school.

The public should not be funding those book tours, either, nor the time her judicial staff spends on the books in the background.

We can expect the mainstream media to feature this for several weeks and demand investigations.

Or not. They only attack conservatives.

The politician book deal scam is such a cash cow for those who can get in. They get huge advances on books no one buys (certainly don't read), or interest groups buy in bulk and then give away or put in storage. Does anyone think Andrew Cuomo spent any time writing a book on how well he handled Covid? What did he get for that? $4 million on a book no one bought? I have a little sympathy for SCOTUS justices, since they generally work until they die and on a fixed gov't. salary, while they could command millions if not in gov't. service. But it's bullshit that any staffers on the federal payroll are allowed to spend one second on facilitating book sales. I had a federal judge sign his book for my dad, but they were classmates long ago and had lost touch. Yeah, I had to have his staff handle it for me and then mail it out. But at least I had some personal connection and initiated the whole thing.

Rest assured, if her health were to take a real nosedive, she could command any price she wanted to step down while the current regime could still name her replacement and ram it through the Senate. Anything she asked for she'd get.

Justice Scalia signed a book he co-wrote for me. All I did was mail it to him with a stamped envelope for him to mail it back. It is a book about persuading judges, and I bought it from his co-author, Brian Garner, at a seminar, who told us Justice Scalia would autograph it if we mailed it to him.

I imagine a Court secretary put it in the mail for him, but I did not have to buy the book to attend an appearance or any such thing.

Plus it is a book about a lawyerly subject and not a child's book. There is nothing wrong with children's books, but draw your own conclusions.

Were she to retire, you can bet your ass she could. Before being appointed, probably not.

Well, we should just add more justices then. I think, and it's well-played, this is a reaction to the write ups of constitutional justices vacationing on their billionaire friends' yachts and similar "issues" the left is latching on to question the current SCOTUS. And, yes, my alter ego is Captain Obvious.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Semi drift... At "my" university, they decided to come up with some "campus book" thing, with the intention (supposedly) of getting the whole "campus community" reading the same book at the same time. The university bought ungodly amounts of the book and tried to give them away. They are unwanted giant boxes of them everywhere on campus. I haven't looked into it enough to figure out the deal, who made out. If it was a payback, a way to inflate numbers and get it on a best seller list, or just a way to push whatever agenda is put forth in the book.

There was another book I used to find all over campus for years. I ran across hundreds of copies of it. It must have been on some class's mandatory reading list. (I finally saved one and read it, not bad but about 3/4's longer than it needed to be.) Looking into it, the author was a professor here, basically forcing students to buy his book.

About 1.5 years ago my Children were in a book of the month club courtesy of their grandparents. Some of the books we got were good, some were definitely wokie tripe in child's book form. One month a kids book from Sotoswine showed up. Mad That fucking thing went directly into a 55 gallon trash bin.

You can use it all you want. Smile Just remember, Sotoswine handle is because she is an unrepentant statist, bigot and bully not due to any physical characteristics. Kinda like a 2020’s version of the 90’s Fineswine was for Feinstein.
