Do. Nothing. Call George Gruhn.

I’m glad you missed that too. Trust me, I’m just asking questions and don’t plan on doing anything, tho the urge to dust that white powder off with a clean cloth is tugging at me, but it stays.

Nothing???

You had the case outside, that’s a no no in itself.

I opened the case too? Good God! The horrors of it all. Razz

If you read the whole thread, you would have seen that as a suggestion. It was in the sun for maybe 4 hours. How many guitar cases get left out in the sun at outdoor concerts?

I just did the online appraisal. Turnaround time is 24-48 hours, but may be longer cause it’s Saturday. I’ll let you know what he says.

I’ve really done nothing but ask questions. People are assuming that I’m cleaning and hacking away at it. Sleep easy tonight. Even the white powder (as much as it bugs me) stays.

Even with period hardware changes he estimated the value as $3500 to $5000 (leaning towards $5k because of the neck). All I've done is kept it clean with guitar polish & kept it away from sunlight.

That's worth a good bit more than 5K. That's a pretty rare guitar you have there.

Hey guys, I'm going to spray up this old guitar I've got with Pledge.

Don't do that. You'll ruin the value of the guitar. Take it to an expert.

Why can't I spray it up with Pledge?

Because you'll ruin the value of the guitar. Take it to an expert.

Hey, I found a 50 year old bottle of Fender polish, can I use that?

Don't do that. You'll ruin the value of the guitar. Take it to an expert.

Ya, but this white powder is really bugging me and I want to clean it.

Don't do that. You'll ruin the value of the guitar. Take it to an expert.

I haven't done anything but ask questions, what are you guys so worried about?

It's because we're worried the next question will be "Hey guys, I got a can of WD-40 you think I can use that?"

It's your guitar. If you want to go Pete Townsend on it, go for it. If you want to light it on fire a la Jimmy Hendrix, more power to you, but you aren't Hendrix and it won't add to the value of the guitar.

Folks who have nothing to gain, who truly are looking out for your best interests are giving you solid advice, but you seem to be resisting and questioning that advice. Nobody here can tell you what Gruhn Guitars, Will York or any other expert is going to say. But come Monday, you can make a few phone calls and find out what they will say. Or you can keep asking questions and keep getting this answer: Don't do that. You'll ruin the value of the guitar. Take it to an expert. The choice is yours.

It's a great guitar and good story. Good luck.

My buddy who is into vintage guitars texted me a video of him playing his ‘59 Jazzmaster, so I sent him the link to this thread.

He recommended using a little boiled lindseed oil on a paper towel to wipe down the fretboard and body. Then use a clean paper towel to wipe off any excess.

That is such a fantastic guitar!

Butch 2340,

Just curious, where are you getting this valuation from?
