I'm still staying away from Amazon so when I need a book, I look elsewhere. Recently, I found betterworldbooks.com. I've bought new and used from them. Sometimes the new books are a little more expensive than amazon but the used books look like they've never been opened. They also donate a book for every one you buy. I'm surely able to suggest them to my friends.

I've used both Abebooks and Thrift Books in the recent past. I try to avoid Amazon, their prices on used can be absurd.

Amazon owns Abebooks. Alibris may be an alternative.

Half Price Books. Not quite the selection that ABE Books has (much less Amazon), more so than Thrift, pricing is so-so. Worth a look if you're shopping.

You got one over there in Walnut Grove? What year is it there? Big Grin

They are rare but when I come across one I pretty much automatically stop in.

Try Bookshelf

You order online, but the sale goes thru a "local" bookstore that you select when ordering. Bookshop then does the shipping. The idea is to support independent (non-Amazon) bookstores while giving you the convenience of ordering online.

That's how amazon started.

Thrift Books. I haven't seen an honest to gosh local bookstore since '93, which was Jenny's Book Nook in Fremont, CA.

Local library ... check out, read, return. Very few books these days I want to keep, and the ones I do are usually on the library book sale rack for fifty-cents.

They generally don’t have modern textbooks though and that’s 95% of what I buy.
