My CPA filed for me in early March. Got my state refund a week later and wrote my check to the Fed on Sunday and wife mailed it yesterday. Net owed about $400. CPA wants me to ratchet down my witholdings due to the law change.

Well, I guess sadly, I did my prelim tax calcs the first week of Jan, updated a couple of times during Jan. I got lazy, didn't submit until around the end of Feb. What can I say, I teach accounting. Roll Eyes

Tax prep for me starts in December and ends in early Feb. My taxes get efiled by the accountant when they are done and I mail my check if I owe any in the end of March with my quarterly estimated tax. I like to pay a little early so the checks have time to clear before the magic day. I may miss out on a few days of interest, but I sleep better when my bills are paid. I would feel far better if I knew my taxes where going to be spent wisely, but since I know they will be pissed away it is very hard to not be bitter about every dollar I send in.

What do you call the person who graduates last in the medical school? That are still called Doctor.

Filing your return on the first day or on April 17 is all considered a timely filing. It's not late until tomorrow.

What's the problem with doing it on 17th?

You can't figure this out? What if you get sick? What if you have a family emergency? What if your computer fails? What if a storm comes through and knocks out your power and your internet connection?

Also, what if "IRS Systems are down!"?

...and a couple of dozen other reasons, all having to do with the unexpected.

Plain enough for you? Waiting until the last second has screwed plenty of people, and not just with filing taxes.

Did you really now know the answer to your question? Really?

Yeah, a meteor could hit the day before on your way to the post office so we can play these scenarios all day long.

If someone can't get their return done by the 17th just file or mail Form 4688. This is the extension that just requires your contact info and SSN. No triggering of late filing once that's into the post office.

Just for you I'm going to file today and wing suit in my documents from 10,000 feet once Judge Gorsuch gets the plane over the post office.

You are wound tight today.

Didn’t get my K-1s until yesterday. Can’t finish my return until they are received. This happens every year. I don’t know why.

Listen, be thick-headed and combative with someone else. You can't figure out simple shit like "give yourself time, so you can do it this day or that, your choice", that's not my problem. You want to come in here and be obtuse, you're gonna hear from me, and I am "wound" the same fucking way today as I am every day and you keep your comments about me to yourself.

Indeed. Isn't it curious how tax day is about as far removed from election day as it can be? April is just about the perfect month for it. It's just long enough before an election that the election isn't top on your mind when you're sending in that check, and just long enough after an election that the taxes you might owe or are paying doesn't hit you until after you've already voted. Diabolical I'm telling you.

Someone here had suggested it I think that tax day should be the day before election day...

Agreed.

In the three decades of filing (since having a job at 14 years old), three times my taxes were filed at the last minute. Normally done in second half of February

We owed a substantial sum this year for a few various reasons. I filed today, and paid today.

I usually file early if I'm getting a refund. If I'm paying, they are getting it on the last damn day possible.
