Here it is 3am and I’m awake. Sinuses switch between stuffed and draining, sore throat, coughing, sleeping in spurts, living in my recliner. It’s been four days now.

Anyone else suffering from cold or flu?

Man...that sucks.
I have year round sinus issues, just a part of living in the "Valley of the Sun". EVERYTHING is in bloom whenever it gets enough water or sunshine. (this month it's weeds popping up in the yard)
If we get rain, the mold starts about 3 days later. If we're dry, then the dust storms get going.
It never ends.

Yup, got the nastiest head cold I can remember having in years. Lots of fluids, NyQuil and sleep and I hope it passes soon.

My eleven year old daughter has had the flu since Saturday. She had a fever with a temperature of 104°F along with coughing and a sore throat. Today is the first day with a normal temperature but the coughing persists.

My 12yo daughter just got over the Flu (type A). She had it for 5 days and was on Tamiflu since we caught it early. The problem is that her lungs are still very bad we are nebulizing her and trying to get her better. Today is exactly one week that she’s been suffering.

My cold started on January 9 ... a month ago. Started with a head cold that was not too bad. Now I just have a dry cough. I've ben able to work and even go on a trip, but I'm just totally dragging... productivity is way down.

If I did not work from home, co-workers would have kicked my ass to the curb a couple of weeks ago.

Here are things my wife and I have found to mitigate against the effects of colds, flues and allergies:

Salt water nasal rinses. We make our own salt water by boiling filtered water and adding a heaping teaspoon of sea salt to a quart of water. She uses a Neti Pot. I use a small, shallow bowl. I like to warm the water in the microwave.

Extra vitamin C during cold and flu season. I got the idea one year when I got sick. Called the doctor's office. Nurse said "I can't tell you not to come in, but there's really nothing we can do for you." When I asked her what she would suggest she replied "Rest, plenty of fruit juice and 2,000 mg of vitamin C per day." I was back up and running in three days. I don't think I've taken ill since I started taking the extra vitamin C as a prophylactic. But this is backstopped with...

Elderberry juice. Woman that owns the club at which I work out swears by it. So we bought a bottle and keep it in the fridge. Every time either one of us suspects we're coming down with something (it's usually my wife), we both start taking a two tablespoons/day of the stuff. My wife started getting sick a few days ago. She sounded horrible. Two days later: Cleared.

Head-steaming. If we do get sick and our lungs become involved we boil a large-ish pot of water, drop in the equivalent of a couple heaping tablespoons of chamomile and a drop of Po-Ho Oil, put our heads over the pot, with a towel tenting over all, inhale through nose, exhale through mouth, for ten minutes. Two-three times a day.

Beyond that: Balanced nutrition--using as little pre-processed foods as possible, regular exercise and plenty of sleep. We also avoid being around sick people, wash our hands regularly, and keep our hands away from our faces to the extent possible.

It's not that we never get sick, or never resort to OTA or prescription medications when we get sick or allergies really get the best of us, but it has become very rare.

I had a cold, sinus infection about a week ago. Two-three bad days. I think I went through 2 boxes of kleenex in one day. Ears hurt.

Much better now but still some drainage and cough.

Hope you feel better soon.

Sore throat?

Get a REAL Aspirin (not Tylenol, Advil, etc). Or get a powdered Aspirin like a Goodys.

Put the Aspirin in a cup and mash it really well, into a powder.

Add really hot water, not boiling, stir until dissolved. Let cool a bit until you can handle it in your mouth.

Gargle with, hold in mouth, swish around, swallow.

Consume entire cup.

I promise this will help. Your sore throat will be more comfortable.

Best wishes to you, hope you feel better.

Thankfully no, but Alaska is near epidemic status on flu right now so work has been busy.

The only cold remedy that ever worked for me was the original Zicam nasal gel whose active ingredient was a zinc compound. My colds were always preceded by a certain tingle in my throat – not painful, but very distinctive. If I immediately applied the Zycam, when I first sensed that tingle, the cold was totally inhibited.

The FDA made ‘em take it off the market (several years ago) because, they said, it interfered with the sense of smell in some people. Fortunately, I have a lifetime supply in my refrigerator. Smile

BTW – prior to the FDA action, my personal physician also recommended the Zicam nasal gel.

Taking medications to deal with allergies have been a part of my life. From shots to the current meds, it's pretty much a daily routine.

Flu/cold, i'm usually pretty good at avoiding but, this year I got hit. Coughing and congestion for 3-days than the following two weeks of phlegm. Took generic NyQuil Cold/Flu liquicaps for three days. Drank gallons of fluid, usually just hot water. Ate lots of chicken soup, Costco rotisserie chicken soup I really like, nothing with dairy or, grease.

Experienced that just before Christmas and it seemed to last about a week.
The cough kind of lingered on for a month or more though.

Feeling a little better now.

Salt water nasal rinses. I do this as well.

Extra vitamin C during cold and flu season. Started this when I felt this coming on.

Elderberry juice. Never heard of this one. Might have to try it.

Head-steaming. Do this as well. Bought a Pure Mist a couple years ago. Best investment!

Sore Throat. I take a couple Table spoons full of Raw Honey (has to be raw, not pasteurized). Great antiseptic, smooth, and tastes good!

Thanks all for thoughts! I was curious if this stuff was spread across the country.

Coming down off a couple days of head cold. Mostly congestion & a light scratchy throat.

My wife does the elderberry thing too.

That sounds like what I have...going on 4 weeks. damn lingering cough!! Saw the doctor early on, diagnosed as viral, so no antibiotics, just let it run its course, cough syrup was about it. Miserable it was.
