V-TailWe Have At Least One HVAC Professional Here
I am trying to locate a 3-ton compressor unit that is compatible with a Goodman variable speed air handler.
I need this in zip code 32714, ASAP.
We recently replaced the Air Handler, and now the compressor has died, we have no AC, temperatures here are running in the high 80s and 90s with no relief in sight.
I have been looking for a suitable compressor unit, have not found any in stock anywhere near here.
Any leads would be appreciated.

nhracecraftNOT an HVAC Professional but, are you looking for the complete Condenser (outdoor) Unit, or just the Compressor?

First choice is complete unit because who knows what other damage was caused by the lightning strike / power surge. If we can't get the complete unit, we will have to go with just the compressor and deal with any other problems when they arise.

V-TailFound what we are looking for in Philadelphia, but they are saying 10-day delivery. Can't live with that.
Anybody from that area driving your pickup truck to the Orlando area tomorrow? I'll pay for delivery.

"Air Conditioning Joe" -- the tech who recently installed the new air handler and thermostat -- has checked at least one of those. No joy. I assume (yeah, I know) that if a distributor does not have the item, the distributor would plug it in to an app that would check other local distributors, as in "I can order it and have it for you tomorrow."

Apparently went to phone number ending 57.
I just resent it to the one ending 90; you should have it now.

NickWhat type of refrigerant was the old outdoor unit?

4MUL8RHave you checked the capacitor? Most of the time, the dual capacitance capacitor fails. One "side" is for the compressor. One "side" is for the fan motor.
Please don't replace a compressor if all it needs is a $10 capacitor.
And, whenever possible, replace a truly defective compressor with a Copeland (Emerson Climate Technologies) scroll compressor. Only four moving parts. Really. I used to design them.

nhracecraft^^ Pretty sure "Air Conditioning Joe" -- the tech who recently installed the new air handler and thermostat, would've checked the Capacitor before telling V-Tail he needs a new unit, and he can't find one anywhere.

Capacitor was, of course, the first thing that we checked. It was fine. I always keep a spare AMRAD (made in U.S.A.) 45 / 5 on hand. $35, not $10, but I'll gladly pay the extra for American vs. Chinese.
As nhracecraft wrote, Joe did a thorough diagnosis. The compressor was definitely bad. DOA. "It's dead, Jim." We're still chasing problems caused by the lightning strike / power surge. Lightning hit (and killed) the tall pine that's only a few feet from the outdoor AC unit. Ruptured the copper coolant lines that run under the slab the house is built on, followed these lines, killed the air handler in the garage, ate some of the conductors in the cable bundle between the air handler and the thermostat, fried the thermostat, ... Nope, the problem definitely was not a "$10 capacitor!"
Joe was here today, installed the new replacement Copeland compressor (I hope you did a good job, designing it!), the system is up and running fine now, with the new compressor. Joe also installed a new contactor. The contact points on the old one were pretty badly pitted.

sigmonkeyOther than the fan and cap(s), (or the condenser coils if they were part of the path to ground for the strike) you should be OK.
Typically, coils will show leak(s), from pinholes immediately to hours from stikes.
Fan motor and caps might fail anytime after.
Since the compressor and contactor were changed and I am certain "AC Joe" checked the disconnect, that's pretty much all there is to units older than about 2012.
(caps, contactor and maybe a defrost board)
So, you should not have any real costly repairs if anything else on the outside unit fails. And those parts are common.

Pipe SmokerIs there anything you can do to prevent subsequent lightning damage?
In the Midwest farmers protect their buildings by mounting lightning rods on top with copper cables running to ground. Probably aluminum nowadays.

HRKHave you turned all this into your insurance, it's getting awful expensive sounding as it progresses.
Glad you got the AC going, just in time for the final stretch of endless summer heat!

Instead of making an insurance claim, consider making a claim with your local power utility.
Several years ago, we had a power outage that was preceded by a power surge. It fried the variable speed motor in my furnace, which was $900. The HVAC repair person confirmed it was damaged by a power surge. We wrote a letter to the power company, included the receipt and explanation/opinion from the HVAC contractor, along with all details of the event. Lo and Behold, we got a check in the full amount to replace the motor! It's worth a try!
