Can anyone guess this location in a painting?
It appears to be signed; can you identify the artist?

I’ve been wondering about the design of the building in the foreground. It seems to be an office building of some sort as it seems to be designed to restrict ingress/egress as well as in building movement of people. It would be a terrible design for a hotel, apartments, or university.

I believe it is the artist's rendering of a fantasy city. It is not Yokohoma or Hiroshima.

I am guessing Reading PA, it has a pagoda and a funky building that looks like it could have been a hotel that showed up in an old picture of Reading when I was looking at pictures of the Pagoda. It also has the river running through the city. It could be the Schuylkill River.

I am thinking that was the artists interpretation not a good map like production.

This is all conjecture.

Maybe, but the pagoda in Reading is on a wooded hill on the edge of town pretty far from the river.

We can’t discern the letters clearly of the artist; I’ll try and snap a close up image and post it.

Can you tell which side of the road the cars are driving? Japan drives on the left.

I believe this is setting a record for the time it takes sigforum to correctly answer a question!

Although the cars appear as colored smudges with no discernible parts, they APPEAR to be driving on the right side of the road.

Unless of course, the guess that this is a strictly imaginary landscape with semi-recognizable structures is correct…

From the shadows either the right side is east or it is west. Guessing from the colors chosen it looks more like dawn than dusk. Also, looking at all the smoke headed right (prevailing westerlies would push smoke east), those clues suggest east is on the right and west on the left. If so, then painting is facing north, with south at the bottom.

Given the above, the big river in the foreground is heading east-west as it goes through town.

It looks to me like there is another river coming in from the north to meet the big river just off the right (east) edge of the map.

So, hypothetically, an American city (drives on right & painting found here & looks like a US flag on the building) with heavy industry (smokestacks) with two rivers meeting - one navigable, oriented east-west. Has (or had) a domed structure on a pond near where the rivers meet and a large, very distinctively shaped building right where a long bridge goes over the navigable river.

I Google-Earthed Pittsburgh, near the junction where the rivers meet, with high hopes. But...no joy. Frown
