But why? You need to not go cold turkey on everything you enjoy or you will be miserable and it all fails

I hear ya PASig, I promise I do, my personality is either 0 or 100. I’ll be okay after a day or two.

The news plus how I’ve been feeling the last year or so really has me wanting to kick it into high gear. It’s scary, with my family history especially. So I’ll be okay.

10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

You're still young being over 40 and taking measures now is helpful. I never thought I would be as old as I am now, not that it is old -56- but it is good to put away things that hurt us. I try to eat better and exercise more. If you still like coffee, do a 50/50 or less caffeine/decaf to help out, that is what I do. One thing I am glad about is my faith in the Lord and His promise is growing stronger as I grow older, as no matter what we do, we can only live for so long.

If that’s your total cholesterol number it’s actually within the good range or so I thought?

No, that's just the LDL. I'm starting a version of the DASH diet but omitting most of the starches and grains. I did get some whole grain bread to eat in the morning with my avocados and fruit.

Salmon and brussel sprouts tonight.

Luckily I enjoy all the food that's good for me, just gotta get used to less salt on it.

My wife is a latina so she makes enough beans and veggies to keep me fed pretty well for lunch and the occasional dinner.

I'm also giving up my black coffee so of course I've got a killer headache today. Will probably subside by Monday.

I'll be sure to update results when I get bloodwork one later this month.

I gave up coffee/caffeine, but cold turkey was not the way to go. You can give it up slowly. My reason was to make my heart happy. It got rid of my PVC's.

"Someday I hope to be half the man my bird-dog thinks I am."

looking forward to 4 years of TRUMP!

As Bikman always states, Prioritize Protein, Control for Carbs, Fill with Fat. Regardless of total cholesterol you want a Trigs/HDL ratio <2. avoiding seed oils will automatically eliminate most processed crap. Increasing maintaining muscle mass is good for regulating blood sugar.

Most of yall know I “quit” drinking, and while I won’t claim to be sober I’ve about eliminated it all together. Special occasions and what not only. However…

1. A1C is just shy of pre-diabetic. This is one I should be able to control with more exercise and better diet. It’s always been a bit high when I’m not staying on top of my cardio. This one is an easy remedy I hope.

2. Testosterone is pretty LOW, one more low reading at the end of the month and they’ll start me on some treatment. So that one is probably common enough, the exercise should help that as well.

3. My cholesterol is HIGH, 192 or so I think she said. Good cholesterol isn’t too bad but the bad one is high. She said if it’s this high when I recheck this month I’ll immediately go on medicine.

So, looks like I’m back to my 5k a day. Back to alternating between chicken and fish. Meal prepping tons of broccoli, green beans, cabbage, and other leafy vegetables. With little to no salt.

I guess my days of doing my whatever I wanted and getting away with it are over. I wanna live a long time so I guess it’s time to start making sure that happens.

I'
m in exactly your position and all I can say is that getting old REALLY sucks, but does beat the alternative.

did they recently change the level?

years ago I went from 160 to 198 in a few years,, mostly because I was stupid with what I ate pre physical,

doc said I was a producer and put me on a statin, that sucked, so I changed my diet and took fishoil, after a few years and the numbers stayed down,

back then the magic number was 200,

It is what pharma wants it to be to sell meds. Ask yourself have statins cured heart disease? Has the rate lowered? They scare people with the idea of death then push meds to give them a false sense of hope. Diet and exercise are the cure, not meds. Meds only mask the issue and normally never address the root problem. Meds cannot overcome poor life choices yet our society thinks they can since it is an easy way out.

My friends son works for a heart doctor and here is a convo the dr had with a patient that had suregery scheduled. Patient has surgery scheduled for 7 am the next day and was told to not eat after midnight. He is 5 foot 7 and 250 pounds. He complained about not being to eat after midnight the night before surgery. Yes, he was complaining that he could not eat 7 hours before major heart surgery. So here was the doctors reply.

Sorry to inconvenience you, to be fair, you have some caloric reserves available. Additionally, the surgery is going to be difficult, you have a big chest, big lungs and big gut, we will be ready for you at 7am.

Patient says, did you just call be fat twice in one sentence?

Doctor says, 2 sentences, but three bypasses are needed.

That demonstrates the problem and medicine is not fixing anything. People have a false security in their effectiveness and think doctors are the cure all, even for bad life choices.
