As an engineer, I’m impressed that the boat remained floating. Very well designed and constructed.

Most boats have floating cavities which can be under the seats in some boats.

In you want a good laugh, go to a marina on the weekend where they are launching and taking boats out. Big Grin

Several times a year we drive to North East, MD (yes, a town) and sit on the elevated back deck of a restaurant named the Nauti Goose. It is adjacent to a yacht basin / boat yard. Watching the landlubber ‘messing about in boats’ launching and retrieving boats is hilarious. Well worth the drive from PA, the food is good and the beer is cold (I have a DD)...

[thread drift]Next time you head down that way for a day trip, consider going an extra 15 minutes or so to Havre de Grace (yes, a town). There's a toll for the bridges over the Susquehanna, but it's a nice town to spend a day in. There's a nice little river walk from the marina to the lighthouse, great food (try MacGregor's or the Tidewater Grill), a large antique mall (Seneca Cannery), Bomboy's candy (and ice cream in season), and lots of little one-of-a-kind type shops, including a pretty impressive used book store.[/thread drift]

I can't believe the bastard pleaded not guilty. Given his comments, I wouldn't be interested in any deals at this point if I were the prosecutor.

The year before I went in the army (I was 16) I spent the summer working on the boat dock/marina on the Snake River at Lewiston, Idaho. What I witnessed there was truly epic in terms of dumb shit, lack of knowledge, unable to follow simple instructions.

Instructions like: "See those ripples right out there? Well, those ripples are caused by a rock bar where the water is about 6 inches deep and your boat draws more water than that. If you try to cross it you will damage your boat and have to be pulled back into the marina!

Waste of breath. 4th of July weekend, 4 hours we pulled about 20 boats off that rock bar.

I've seen some crazy stuff out on the water but that is some amazing video of some crazy shit.

I'm amazed that they were able to save the video!

I guessing a GoPro in a a waterproof housing. Those housing are pretty tough unless it took a direct hit itself.

2 victims are LEO - the boat owner/one suing, and the other a former SWAT who stepped down to School Resource Officer.

I wonder why all 3 fishermen are not suing together (joinder). Seems like LEO #2 has some sort of issue given that he stepped down.

Weldcraft boats are built like tanks and that video proved it. When we were looking for our next boat 15 years ago I wanted a 22 footer but it was way out of our price range.

It would be cool if the owner of that boat donated it to Weldcraft for showing at various boat shows.

Even cooler if Weldcraft exchanged it for a brand new boat, gratis.

And that kids is why they say you should wear a life jacket at all times when on the water.

That's a double edged sword in an event like this. One may wish to submerge several feet beneath the surface while diving in to prevent getting hit by the boat or it's propeller. Difficult to do that with a life vest.

I've been boating, on-and-off, for a good many years. Sailing and powerboating. Have taken, and passed, ASA 101 and 103 Certification classes.

That's a new one on me.

There is an argument (frequently hotly debated) against wearing PFDs below decks as a sudden, catastrophic sinking event can leave people w/o the ability to escape fully-submerged, flooded compartments. But above decks? Never heard of such a thing.

Larsen told The Oregonian the accusation against him was “fake news.”

This is what happens when people get behind the helm of a boat w/o understanding maritime law.

"Fake news." Hahahaha. Nice try, idiot.

Pleasure boating really is too unregulated. In most states, someone can buy a boat, even a large yacht (up to 200 GT or about 100'), pay cash for it and there is no requirement that it needs to be insured, no requirement that the owner (Captain) has to take any sort of training whatsoever. Some of the people that buy boats and make no effort to learn the rules of the road and the safety items and so forth are quite dangerous like evidenced in this video

Indeed.

One of my first experiences sailing on Lake St. Clair was watching a floating apartment building (as we used to call them) cut across our bow from our port side.

We were probably ok maintaining course and speed, but, once it became clear the other boat was not going to alter course, and there was little time left for an avoidance maneuver, we tacked to a starboard tack, to "duck under" him, so as to make sure.

We never even saw evidence of life aboard the other boat.

That was far from the only time I had to take avoidance maneuvers I should not have had to.
